Maybe my standards for romantic novels have gone up a notch since I read The Hating Game (which is so incredible), but this one really didn't make the cut for me. I was intially intrigued by the synopsis and thought it was a cute little springtime read. It took me a while to pinpoint why I didn't like this book, and it mostly had to do with the characters and the writing. The two main characters, Nikole and Carlos as so flat, so flat that the only thing that is slightly interesting about them is their ethnicity. The way they think and talk is so cringey, with so many unecessary descriptions about their inane inner thoughts. For example, Carlos receives an email from Nik for the first time and he almost trips over the Amazon box in his doorway. "Worth it, he thought to himself" were the exact words that followed. Was that really necessary? Are readers really so stupid that they cannot infer details for themselves without the author spelling it out? There were so many descriptions and mundane details in this book that I found myself skimming through with the only purpose of writing a review of how terrible it was. Usually, it would take me a couple days to finish a chick lit novel, but in this case it took me an entire week to wade through all this horribly written dialogue. The plot was really so mediocre and predictable, there was nothing that I didn't see coming. However, the ending was so cliche I couldn't believe my eyes. Nik actually has an epiphany of love in a grocery market aisle, and it's all spelt out with capital letters. SHE SUDDENLY FINDS THAT SHE IS IN LOVE. CAN YOU UNDERSTAND, WITH THESE CAPITAL LETTERS? It's all really an insult to the reader's level of intellect, and a fine waste of my reading time and 12 whole dollars. I weep in perpetual pain until I can read something to erase my memory.

Cute story. Some minor inconsistencies in the plot were over looked by the editor

I had high, high hopes for this book. I was disappointed. There were great elements: POC characters, female empowerment, funny segments, and some very hot sex scenes. The cons were Carlos being just as misogynistic and entitled as Nik's exes. The drama scene was so forced, seemed to come out of nowhere and basically made a fool of the both of them.

I was given an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I quite enjoyed this book. I had read the author’s other companion book, The Wedding Date, and enjoyed it, and was looking forward to The Proposal. Carlos was actually my favorite character in the first book, so I was excited to see him as one of the main characters in this new book.

I thought the story was cute, and being a baseball fan, I did enjoy the beginning chapters of the book. I don’t usually read contemporary romance novels, but this was a fun, quick read, and I’ll definitely be recommending it to readers at my branch.

Okay so I am just now learning that this is the second book in a series, but even without the context of the first, I really enjoyed this cute rom com! I am loving the more socially aware skew modern romance books are taking too. For example, the couple in this story is mix raced and the trials of this fact are not ignored.
