I sat on this for 24 hours before writing the review. I don't have a lot of triggers, I can process things like a healthy adult, however this did bring up a lot of stuff. So to write a fair review I had to give my head some space.

Growing up with Kya was a beautiful and sad journey all at the same time. She was so strong and overcame everything thrown at her but you couldn't help but think that she shouldn't have those things thrown at her to begin with.

Honestly the ending wrecked me. Because while I fully expected it, I didn't want to believe it.
I wanted to hold on to Kyas innocence.

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster. If you can handle the content, I strongly recommend this read.

I read this because it was so highly recommended. It was a fine read and I like the main character. The ending was fairly predictable. It was a fine read, not particularly exciting.

Listened to the audio bc I was scared reading it, but it's okay. I was spoiled by reading the reviews (my bad) but still liked it enough to finish it.

I think I let people hype it up too much for me, so my expectations were really high… this was a really mediocre read with some tropes & racist depictions i find…done  poorly & was mostly unnecessary. (i know theyre trying to provide a “realistic 1960s setting” but it was poorly done.)
Overall, I was a bit disappointed

WOW!!!! This book was absolutely amazing. Kya- young girl living in an abusive home deals with living a lifestyle that brings judgment and is ostracized from the surround community. As this young woman gets older she continues to navigate through all of these difficult situations while being utterly alone.

The poetry excerpts within the book give glimpses into the emotionally complex young woman.

While everyone else has been unreliable, nature and its creatures remained present for their never ending lessons and support.

Delia Owens absolutely knocked this one out of the park. The writing was absolutely beautiful. This book moved me to tears.
