This book didn’t really keep me on the edge of my seat or have some crazy twist
(although I was shook that she actually murdered Chase because I remember thinking it was so obvious it wasn’t her)
, but the Kya’s character and storyline were so beautifully put together and heartbreakingly realistic that I figured this book deserved at least a 4.5. It told a story of a realistic love, a broken family creating a broken girl, and a young kid learning to survive on her own on the outs of society. I saw myself in Kya while also seeing everyone else but me in her. Her strength has really resonated with me and inspires me to depend on myself, and her connection with nature was remarkable. I really really liked this book ❤️

I'm gradually adding books I've read in 2021 to give a true reflection of the books I've read since keeping records.  In January 2021, I kick-started my reading journey having put reading on the  back burner whilst bringing up the children only reading when on holiday, having previously being an avid reader.  A very beautifully written book with the celebration of nature and the marshes becoming a character in its own right. A coming of age story, of poverty, and the discrimination of the Marsh girl. Haunting but so so beautiful. A wonderful read

The descriptions of nature and the life of the protagonist is really vivid. I felt like I was there. It is difficult content but ultimately about the strength of the human spirit. I really liked the authors writing and the pacing of the first 75% of the novel. The last 25% was definitely interesting but the pacing changes a bit which I didn't love as much.

Read via audiobook (Little Brown Audio)
Read for Bookclub - Wasn't going to pick up for myself as I try to avoid popular books as I am usually dissappointed, but so glad I did not skip over it!

An incredible read!

The first little treat was the voice actress of the audiobook sounding like Moira from 'Schitt's Creek'. The main treat is the delightful descriptions of the Marsh!

Due to the context of the time period and location, I had reservations that Kya was the author's attempt to parralel or represent the experience of a Black person and segregation. Thankfully, upon finishing the novel, I was left satisfied that was not the case.

Owens was able to create an original bildungsroman about a girl who is challenged to survive in a unique environment, and while not oblivious to the racial tension, the limited display in the novel of the injustices and hate crimes against the Black community (despite segregation, which Kya is unlikely to have considered anything other than typical) help demonstrate Kya's isolation to society as a whole.

It was a pleasure to read Kya champion the odds stacked against her, and I celebrated as she persued opportunities presented to her. I respected her resourcefulness as she replicated natural occurences within interpersonal interations, despite the methods being unorthodox.
