It made me extremely emotional. I devoured this book in ways I had not in years. I did not expect to love this book and I feel deep sadness lingering from how much I cried reading through this masterpiece. What a brutal story. It resonates so much it hurt.

captivating but like a nicholas sparks movie (I've never read his books) a tad cheesy and over the top - good, not great, BUT kept me reading from start to finish without many breaks which I've been struggling with lately

I loved the beautiful descriptions in this book, but was frustrated by the pacing and some of the author's choices regarding including racist interactions that didn't seem to serve a purpose in the context of the story (to me, as a white person, so) and the CONSTANT fatphobia in describing Mabel. Like, every other sentence. I don't think I would have read this if I hadn't been asked to - sometimes it wasn't very engaging. I did like listening to it versus reading it - from what I saw of the book, it had a lot of written out dialect that tripped me up, but I liked listening to the narrator. I do understand the hype, but for me it was more ehh.
