4.5 stars. A great collection of novellas. Polish Boy had a believable and interesting situation with a brilliant kid. This was built on in Teacher’s Pest, with the bonus of a fun philosophical discussion. The Ender’s Game novella works well on its own, but can easily be skipped in favor of the full novel, which is better. Investment Counselor was a tad weaker but still a fun introduction of Jane.

I hope to use at least one of these stories to teach with my class when we read Ender's Game together (Wish me luck!). I really enjoyed this addition to the canon of Ender Wiggin's universe, especially the stories where we get to know Ender's parents a little better. It also really fleshes out how people would have felt about the establishment of the particular sociopolitical situation that young Ender and the other citizens take for granted in the novel. The original novella was... less awesome than the novel version, so feel free to skip that, but the account of 20 year old Ender's first encounter with Jane was absolutely hilarious. It reminds me that I never finished the last three parts of the Ender series (Speaker for the Dead, etc). Oops. I should go do that...

The quality of these short stories really varied for me. I think the first two are a mix of just OK and bad. It was interesting to see the original short story for Ender's Game, though, and the fourth, Investment Counselor, was also very good. Probably only worth reading this volume if you're a big fan of the series.

This little collection of four stories includes the original Ender's Game novella, stories with perspectives on both of Ender's parents before they were his parents, and a story from after the Ender's Game novel. All fine, but not amazine. I'm apparently a sucker for all things Ender, but I'm feeling officially sick of different angles and viewpoints of his story. If my brother weren't giving me these books, I don't think I'd be reading them anymore.

The short stories in themselves are cute... but it's hard to believe that Ender's parents were really that smart. Why were they so stupid in Ender's Game? I felt like their young selves weren't consistent with their older ones.

Review to come when I have my computer back! :D Until then, I can say that I LOVED the new look into Ender's world -- to think that all this time, there were prequel novellas to my favorite book just sitting around...
