I am reading the Outlander books in number order (chronological?) so I read this book between Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. I suspect that the order that I am reading these books in has an impact on my enjoyment because I didn't really know who the characters in this book were which meant that I wasn't really invested in their story. The story itself was fine but I don't think it stands in its own right, you definitely need to have some insight into who these characters are to take something away from it.

This is my favorite of the Outlander spin-off novellas. Minnie and Hal are not major characters in the main series, but their backstory here is so good! I like Hal in this story nearly as much as I like John, and that's saying a lot since John is one of my most favorite characters from the entire series. :)

The Outlander universe just keeps getting better and better. This started a little slow, but then picked up. Jamie makes a tiny appearance, and there is no Claire, but it was nice to meet some other characters of the time.

I find this authors novellas to be… strange. Perhaps it’s because I haven’t read the full series yet? So I’m a bit out of touch with the world? But until the authors note at the end I wasn’t sure why this story was relevant at all to the outlander series despite the fact that Jaimie was in one scene. (Spoiler) also the sex scene was so freaking random?! And then she was pregnant?! That all just seemed sooooo weird and like the author wanted that to be the way their story went but didn’t have any ideas as to how to get from point a to b? I don’t know (end spoiler)

I liked it much better the second time. I was able to piece together the story with the perspective of knowing the rest of the series. Also, I appreciated the characters more knowing their arcs. It was fun to visit their beginnings.

This took me way too long to finish. I couldn't keep up, I'm not too sure why, probably listening to it while too tired. I liked the narration of it though.
