The space between you and me is longer than forever and I will show them that forever is not so far away.

Firebird is about a young aspiring black ballerina, but she lacks confidence in her abilities. The illustrations are intriguing and I love the message of breaking racial stereotypes and following your dreams, but even though I wanted to love the story, I felt like it was lacking.

Gorgeous illustrations. Lovely verses, but they went over the girls' head.

Misty Copeland is fantastic, Firebird is fantastic, the art in this is lovely, but the whole thing together kinda fell down for me. It's hard to draw about ballet, I guess?

Beautiful picture book told in flowing verse with strong descriptions. Follow your dreams, regardless of color, believe in yourself.
I love how in the author's note Misty Copeland explains how when she looked at books about ballerinas she didn't see herself, but images "of what a ballerina should be, and she wasn't me, brown with tendrils sweeping her face."
Favorite line "I'm gray as rain heavy as naptime..."

This is a special book. A strong mentor. A sparse lyrical story of hope, empowerment, & finding confidence. The beauty of movement and language. Misty Copeland creates inspiration. Paired with Christopher Myers' eye-catching illustrations creating a three dimensional background effect and the feeling of movement. This story moved me.

This book is absolutely beautiful. I love the lyrical free-style writing. The imagery created in Copeland's words is gorgeous. She invokes pictures of "a dreaming shooting star of a girl" and "wrap[ping] our hearts careful as ribbons on pointe shoes". So beautiful. You can really envision what Copeland writes and it is magnificent.

The illustrations are also fantastic. Myers really captures the precision and beauty of the ballerinas' movements on each page. Absolutely gorgeous.

The message is also beautiful. This is such an uplifting and inspiring book. I really enjoyed it. This book makes the reader really believe that he or she can do anything.

Fantastic. Well-done.
