Wow. Talk about underbelly. This mystery is impregnated with all the nastiness of cowardly brown-nosers, a certifiable, dictatorial headmaster, and disturbed kids who may be Madeline's only hope of escape.

You won't be able to put it down...

I did not realize this was a mystery.

I enjoyed this book more than A Field of Darkness by the same author. If I hadn't read this book than I might not have checked out any other books after reading A Field of Darkness.

I thought this was much better than the first book in this series though the plotting of the actual mystery was still the main negative. I decided to listen to this on audio since the narrator, Hillary Huber, has the kind of cynical world weary though snarky voice that really fit the main character.

Madeline Dare has moved to a small town and is teaching at a school for rich kids with special needs. Everyone goes to therapy including the teachers and the owner is more interested in his new helicopter than in problems going on at the school. Then two kids Madeline has been helping die and she's the main suspect.

I just loved Madeline Dare! She's gutsy, strong-willed and quirky. This being book two there was talk of the first book but fortunately gave no spoilers. The book was a lot of fun. The characters were quirky and the mystery well-told. I'll now go back and read the books in order.

Madeline Dare is disturbed about the strange discipline at the school where she teaches, but not disturbed enough to do anything about it, until two students she cares about kill themselves.

Or do they?

Suspecting the deaths were really murder, Madeline finds herself accused of the crime and starts digging for the motives of a killer who won't stop killing.

This book is not a cozy mystery, but it's not anything darker. Read has a zingy sense of humor and a novel way of weaving in pop culture references that is refreshing and funny.

This book starts off quick, grabbing you from the start, and making you think "seriously?!" However, after time too many events start to happen, and the reader is pulled in one direction and then jerked in another. The book ends in a sort of Hollywood blockbuster fashion, and seems a bit unrealistic. I would have preferred if the author had toned it down a bit and focused more on the teacher/student/faculty relationships, which were truly bizarre.

Too much 90s snark for right now…

Madeleine Dare is a sympathetic heroine, and a school full of crazy kids is always a treat, but not even they can save this watered-down mess. A whole lot of dialogue and not much action. By the end I was begging for people to stop gibbering.
