4.5/5 stars.
While different from the usual storytelling of Tolkien, this book sets the stage with fantastic world building and eye opening short stories from the universe of Arda.
This book is really a set of semi-chronological short stories from the first age (and a little bit beyond and before) of Middle-Earth, as well as a telling of the creation of Arda and the Undying Lands.
While spectacular for world building, some chapters really just describe the geography or political status of kingdoms or countries. They include huge amounts of information and really you can’t remember it all if you wanted to. These chapters I felt were weak, especially being spoiled as I am from his other enticing works. On the other hand, chapters such as “Of Beren and Luthien”, and the ones about Turin and then the fifth battle, were some of the most spectacular stories I’ve read.
Great collection of his imaginative writing, however not in the storytelling sense you would expect. Don’t read this book expecting an epic story, but expect a collection of stories laid out in an informational or religious-text fashion.

Too many names. I need to read it in print and take notes to keep up.
