Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a wonderful and enjoyable read... until the last section. Usually emotional and inspiring, I felt blindsided by the terrible understanding of female anatomy or pregnancy as well as what I perceived as multiple grammatical errors by the translator. I actually found the way they regarded Kei's pregnancy and coordinated death (to save her and Nagere's baby) to be absolutely ridiculous and the sort of fictitious bullshit that only a male author would dream of writing.

It’s honestly a really good book but at times the stories felt too disjointed if that makes sense. Like there seemed to be some bigger through plot but it was always missing something to move that larger plot along. It is a really great casual read though and it’s a nice reflective book with no pressure to get to the end

Fittingly, this book benefits from going back for a second visit. There are lots of subtle, beautiful interactions between characters that I didn’t fully appreciate the first time, but that hit harder and made more sense the second time.

Give the time-travel mechanics some grace and you’ll have a better experience. Its both a cute story that tugs at heartstrings at times and a mental exercise in acceptance and releasing control of things that happened in the past.

3.5 stars overall: 3 for round one, 4 for round two.
