I freaking loved this book so much. Will be on my rereads/in-a-funk list from now on.
**1/21/24** - did a reread. Started with the audiobook but couldn't take the narration and switched to the ebook. Still enjoyed the book a lot but not as much as the first time.

The first story I've read by this prolific author of lesbian romance, The Roommate Arrangement is an opposites attract romance between a lively stand-up comic and a taciturn ex-cop. In order to score the cheap but perfect LA apartment right near the comedy club where Rae, the ex-cop, now works security, she and Steph have to pretend to be lovers (the apartment owners only rent to couples, clearly against the law as even Steph and Rae realize, but since neither is willing to challenge them about it, it serves as convincing device for the forced proximity trope). Though extrovert Steph and introvert Rae seem to be opposites in every way, as they gradually move from strangers to acquaintances, and then even to wary friends, the two discover that their opposite growing-up experiences may have given them something in common after all. Though the sexual sparks here didn't burn up the sheets (perhaps because I'm a het reader), I found the strong writing and careful character development quite appealing. Will have to check out this author's backlist...

Jae's characterisation is second-to-none, and every one of her novels takes me into a specialist world, with jargon intact and expertise written effortlessly; whether it's an Emergency Department/Casualty, the niche market of high-end stationery sales, or the LA comedy club scene. How does she do it?!
