I like her humour most of the time, though I could really do without the fatshaming and ableist jokes.
The science is just the right amount for me.

“206 BONES is the story of a scientist who wishes to become the Grail Knight.”
“Though qualified in one field, the individual aspired to much more. The result was disastrous.”
In a post-word essay from her forensic files entitled, “CAMELOT? OR SCAM A LOT?”, author Kathy Reichs pulls back the actor’s proverbial fourth wall and talks directly to her reading audience concerning the motivation behind 206 BONES and makes a compelling case for board certification of forensic practitioners accepted as qualified experts in the context of a trial.
206 BONES might be classified as a medical thriller based solely on Ms Reich’s past novels but, in truth, it’s much more of a police procedural or a standard mystery built around the theme of evidence gleaned from the examination of human remains by a forensic anthropologist. And it’s gripping stuff! Just as would happen in the real world, Reichs’ main woman, Tempe Brennan, is seen to be juggling several cases simultaneously while also dealing with a serious case of lethargy, ennui and a general sagging of morale in her work environment. In addition, the issue of whether to renew the romantic side of her relationship with Detective Ryan after a brief reconciliation with his wife hit the skids is constantly intruding on her thoughts. The side-bar scientific essays that Reichs uses to portray the anthropological underpinnings of Brennan’s sleuthing and deductions is offered straight up with no dilution or dumbing down (At least, I think so! It’s certainly at the limits of this lay reader’s ability to understand it). And it’s absolutely fascinating material! Who knew so much information could be gleaned from skeletons or even a random collection of bones!?
Last but not least, I always enjoy the Canadian connection and the odd little tidbit of French or French Canadian trivia. The vocabulary of French Canadian profanity is a never ending source of interest for me!
Highly recommended.
