This is the second book in a series set on the island of Gotland, just off Sweden. The two main characters are Knutas, a detective and Johan, an investigative news reporter. In this book, an alcoholic is found murdered and a 14-year old girl go missing, and eventually it turns out that the two are connected.
The translation can be a bit stilted at times but they are good mysteries.

I got confused which is nothing, absolutely nothing, new. But one night, for some reason, I plucked THE INNER CIRCLE by Mari Jungstedt from the stacks, and started reading. Then I got quite convinced I'd already read the book. So I went to check and found UNSEEN, which I then re-read, ending up very struck by the similarities between the two plots. Which got me wondering if there were similarities in all of them, and as I had a number of the books to hand, I thought I'd read them in order and see what was going on.
Still managed to screw up the order completely. Sigh. Oh, and THE INNER CIRCLE was also published as UNKNOWN just to add to the confusion.
So, anyway, I read UNSEEN, then THE INNER CIRCLE / UNKNOWN, then THE KILLER'S ART and finally UNSPOKEN which got me to the end of the books that were here, waiting to be read. Having spread this little exercise out over a couple of months, I was still struck by the similarities - sometimes in plot elements, always in the ongoing personal elements, and overwhelmingly in the way that the journalistic aspects take precedence over the police investigation, although the last part does seem to moderate a little in the final book - UNSPOKEN.
It comes as absolutely no surprise that the author of these books has worked as a journalist as that viewpoint is undoubtedly the strongest in all of these books. Whilst that aspect is obviously written with authority, it does rather skew the investigative aspects of the various cases. The personal complications of this particular journalist's personal life, absolutely did not help this reader as the whole thing lurched too much into melodrama for my liking. Add to that a rather journalistic, rather than storytelling author style and I will admit I was struggling.
A struggle obviously not helped by the idea of reading all of the books in rapid succession. I could really see the similarities after the second book, and the increasing predictability, and to be frank, tediousness of the personal life was increasingly boring and vaguely irritating. I definitely remember reading UNSEEN the first time round (of course I do, the similarities between it and UNKNOWN were what sent me off on this quest after all), and whilst I was not overly impressed at the time, I wasn't put off completely either. By the end of all four books though I have to confess I was increasingly underwhelmed with the series. Not one that I'd avoid, but not one that I'd shunt to the top of the pile by default.

The second book in the series. Not as great as the first one, but still good. An alcoholic, former photographer is found murdered, and later on a teenage girl. How can these two murders be related to each other? Journalist Johan is on the case, and so is Inspector Anders Knutas. I like the pace and back stories in these books. The strong characters are interesting and I crave to get to know them better. Several surprises regarding relationships. How little do we actually know about our spouses and friends? I like this series and recommend it to readers of crime, murder mysteries and Nordic noir.

Czasami łapię się na zabawnej myśli - źródłem wszelkich nieszczęść, jakie spotykają bohaterów i społeczności przedstawione w kryminałach, są autorzy kryminałów. Podobne uczucie miałem w przypadku lektury drugiej powieści Jungstedt. Gotlandia z pierwszej części cyklu była sielska, anielska... aż tu bum! Seryjny morderca. Romans. Inne przykrości.
U Jungstedt podoba mi się to, że wykorzystuje potencjał serii powieści i pozwala niektórym wątkom rozwijać się bardzo powoli (jeśli ktoś wcześniej przeczytał Nesbo, to wie o co chodzi). Jest oczywiście sprawa kryminalna, ale ona ma miejsce między okładkami i jest wyjaśniona. Wątki obyczajowe, niespiesznie rozwijające się w tle mają szansę na normalny rozwój. Z drugiej strony wymusiło to na autorce wzrost przestępczości w tym regionie Szwecji: cóż, cykl składający się z jednego kryminału i kilku romansów wyglądałby dziwnie.
Oczywiście czytelnika cyklu zirytować może powtarzanie pewnych informacji, ale nie jest ono specjalnie uciążliwe. Powiedzmy: porządkuje.
Druga z powieści przedstawiających warsztat śledczy komisarza Knutasa dzieje się niespełna pół roku po pierwszej. Tym razem nie mamy do czynienia z seryjnymi morderstwami, a przynajmniej nie tak wygląda to na początku. I znacznie większą rolę, niż w "Niewidzialnym" pełni przypadek. W wątku kryminalnym to przypadek pozwala Knutasowi odkryć ponurą prawdę. W wątku romansowym przypadek gmatwa relacje między Emmą i Johanem.
Dla informacji: ginie pijaczyna, niegdyś utalentowany fotograf. To, co z początku wygląda na efekt pijackiej burdy o pieniądze gmatwa się. W tym samym czasie znika dziewczyna. Sytuacja gmatwa się, kiedy przypadek pozwala policji połączyć te dwa znaczenia. Jest to przełom, który nic nie wnosi...
Jungstedt ze szczególnym talentem rozwija wątek romansowy. Nie jest on idyllicznie fałszywy, jest pogmatwany, dość wiarygodnie przedstawiono rozterki Emmy.
Z pewnością lepsze od debiutu.

En spännande bok där jag ville veta hur det skulle gå. Gillar att Jungstedt väver samman det vardagliga med polisarbetet, att allt inte är så lätt i både en familj och på jobbet. Karaktärerna kändes mer uttänkta denna gång och hade mer djup som gav läsaren intressanta berättelser vid sidan om att följa. Slutet var mycket spännande och lite svårt att lista ut, men jag lyckades fast jag hade mina tvivel på att det var rätt person jag misstänkte ända till slutet.

I almost gave up on this author after reading #3 in the series, The Inner Circle. This mystery, the second in the Anders Knutas series, was a much more satisfying read with a well developed plot and good cast of characters. Phew!
