Mmm. This book was a nice ramble, a predictable but enjoyable plot (though I had wished she’d gone to Australia instead!). A little slow to start but well placed through the latter half. The characters were a bit two dimensional but, not to their detriment. They were still pleasant. The ending was fairly abrupt but generally it was a nice distracting read.

I really enjoyed this. It was a bit predictable and saccharine toward the ending but the engaging writing and storytelling was so enjoyable!

My only complaint is with the publisher. They literally gave away the whole plot with spoilers on the back blurb!

Rhys Bowen serves up a historical romance. This book begins the last year of year of WWI, May 1918. I love that we learn about the history of land girls and their commitment to doing their part on the home front. I found the character development to be well done. Some of the story line was very predictable but there is a surprise mixed in here and there.
The narration was just ok for me on this one. The male voices grated on my ears. It distracted from the story somewhat. Otherwise, this is a great read for a vacation. Not one that you have to focus on every detail and pay attention so you wont get confused. You learn a bit of history, gardening, and of course class and culture.

I am a big fan of historical fiction and really enjoyed this book - it didn't disappoint at all. It had a lot of good layers to it. I thought it resolved a bit "simply" - but otherwise, I really did enjoy it.

A highly enjoyable read, I felt such sympathy for the main character. I was happy with the ending, too!

A very pleasant read about Land Girls in England during WWII. The romance is formulaic and the ending predictable, but the details about life there during the war and the descriptions of the class system were really good.

I went back and forth between a 1 star and 2 star rating for this silly predictable book about well I'm not sure... the plot changed and became more ridiculous with every new character and chapter. I finally settled on 2 stars because I did learn about the Women's Land Army during WWI. Oh and the tittle - not once is the term victory garden used in the book.

I love a solid historical fiction and this one is. Set during World War I, Emily Bryce is turning 21 and is ready to be a part of the efforts of the war despite what her parents want her to do - find a suitable boy and marry him! She goes against her parents wishes and enlists to be a land girl where she helps out on farms where the men have gone off to war.

I love it when I read a historical fiction book set in a time and a place that I have read about before but takes a unique viewpoint and makes me think about the time and place in a whole new way. I didn't know anything about the land girl program before this book and didn't even think about how the farmers survived while their sons and even the husbands went far to fight the war. I know I have said it before but I love it when I learn something when reading a historical fiction but it isn't obvious until I am done reading the story!

I quite enjoyed this book although Emily’s naivety after reading the damn journals made my eyes roll. The relationships among the women were the highlight and it’s a good story. I got cocky about how predictable it was and didn’t see the ending coming, which bumped it up to 3.5/four stars. I’ve been in a reading slump and this was just what I needed. A quick, fun read with poignant details from 1918.

Rhys Bowen never disappoints with her stories.
