This is a nice read. The characters are great, the worldbuilding is really interesting and engaging and it is a fast read. At some points it feels a bit deus ex machina, but I still enjoyed it.
First in a series but one that is an off shoot of another so I didn't know why certain characters were in important. The action scenes were vague.
Decent first book, though it didn't read like a first book. Seemed like a ton of stuff happened before this book and was referred to almost like we should know.
Also much of the story was rather predictable.
But I did enjoy it quite a bit, and I hope that like the Mercy books, these too will get better as we go along. =D

The audiobook with the different voices is awesome. I'm not sure I would have liked this book so much reading it. Perhaps 3 stars. But 4 definitely for the "production" of the audiobook. I was hooked!
And to the Mercy Thompson fans out there... please don't hate me too badly, but I'd honestly read about Anna and Charles's story, and parts of Bran's pack more than Mercy's antics and drama any day.

I really like Anna, and I really like Charles. I had definitely inflated how much their relationship happens in this book in my memory. Waiting to re-read Hunting Ground and see how it develops. Big Bad in this is witches. It's also sad.

I really liked learning more about the role of an Omega wolf in a pack. I enjoyed seeing more relationship development between Anna and Charles as they navigate their mating bond. I loved seeing a variety of wolves, and how they all work through their struggles between the pull of the instincts of the wolf, and how they want to behave as a human.
There were some jaw dropping moments, and I literally teared up toward the end for a variety of reasons. I also liked the call back to Mercy.
(This is part of the Mercy Thompson World series, which includes the Mercy Thompson series and the Alpha & Omega series. This is Mercy Thompson World # 2 and Alpha & Omega # 1)

it's a 3.5
I likd the variation from the original Mercy series. I'm curious to read more books

2021 Re-Read in anticipation for the next in series
Still so good. I love Patricia Briggs with my entire being. Charles and Anna have a dynamic that's so unique as compared to others in the Mercyverse and I just enjoy starting from the beginning to remind myself how they began. Charles is so respectful for such an alpha male (meaning the type of character and his wolf status) and Anna just reads as real to me. No one holds as much importance to me as Mercy, of course, but these books are some of the only successful spin-offs I've ever read.
Original, crap review
This was really good!!! Very confusing, because apparently there’s a little novella that precedes it, but once I got caught up I found this book to be very enjoyable. I’m a real ho for protective alpha males in books (but not in life), so this was right up my alley.
