Patricia Briggs has a really compelling way of telling a story that I really appreciate — and this was no exception. An extension of the Mercy Thompson universe, this story hits the ground running and never really slows down. Werewolf politics, ancient history, dark witches, mysterious murders — it’s all a rollercoaster that comes to a relatively satisfying conclusion. Will definitely read more in this series.

I'm not sure if I like this series as much as Mercy Thompson just yet. Mostly because Charles is great (Anna is also pretty cool, but I'm still reserving judgment on her a little bit), but he's no Mercy. It was really great to learn more about the Marrok's pack and about Bran himself (super depressing, but great. I hope that Bran gets it together in future books, because he really bummed me out this time around). It was also awesome to learn more about witches in this world. They are really scary! Hopefully in future books I will be just as interested in Anna and Charles as I am in everyone else in the pack.

Enjoyed this story. Will probably listen to others in series.

This was so good. I love shifter novels LOVE THEM. They are one of my favourite tropes but I kept putting this off. I devoured the Mercedes Lackey books (1-5) a couple of years back but binged too much and needed to take a little break. A good friend of mine recommended this series as it obviously works alongside the Mercedes books and is its own universe. It was exactly what I needed.

As written in the blurb it massively helps to read the short novella that proceeds this. I would of being hesitant and lost without its grounding. It was lovely to see Samuel and Bran in other contexts that help me as a reader of both series understand their journey. I kept remembering details and moments that fit into the other timeline.
The plot was fast-paced and It was well developed.
I loved Charles and Anna. I also love that Anna is this flawed, fragile but a beautiful soul that appears like a small bunny that could be stomped on and destroyed but really her roots are strong and resourceful. Charles is Charles. I'm majorly crushing on him. He was strong, capable, dependable and above all else wonderfully in love with Anna.

I devoured this book and cannot wait to read book two.

A good start to the series. I’m a fan of the Mercy Thompson books and it’s nice to be in that world again, with new characters to explore.
