This book was really cute. I like the sweet stories, they are really a joy to read.

This was a revisit for me.
I loved it more the second time as there was lots of details I missed. It was also interesting to revisit because I know so much more about the characters now. Things that are revealed in later books.

I love the weight that PB gives to Anna's PTSD from all the trauma in her first 3 years of being a wolf. The story starts just hours after the prequel ended. So we get to be a part of the rocky and careful dance of the beginning of Anna and Charles' mating. They barely know each other, but their wolves already consider them mates. And they admire each other but come from very different backgrounds. Anna really knows very little about being a wolf and Charles was never fully human.
But they are both considerate and thoughtful people so they muddle through as the story goes on.

A rogue wolf is sighted in the Cabinet Mountains wilderness of Montana. A wilderness creased with deep dark ravines filled tall silent pines in the dark of winter.
But the wolf is not alone.
Anna and Charles are sent to either kill the rogue or bring it back for Bran to help.

I loved being there for Anna as she learns how to be a wolf and how to be an Omega. She is stronger than the knew. She manages to hold her own amongst people who have been wolves for a very very long time.

The mystery was good, the atmosphere was spooky and chilling. The action was nail biting. And then there's all the love for Anna bottled up in Charles that he's not sure what to do with. He doesn't want to scare her and he has some self loathing. But he loves her so much!
It was wonderful.

Fantastic Climax with a long wind down afterwards.

I will be rereading again!
The audio reader was fabulous!

Safety is good
SpoilerThere is another wolf (Sage) who calls Charles 'Charlie' and it bothers Anna that there's that over familiarity but at the same time she likes Sage. But Charles sees her like a little sister. There's no deets in this one about his past flings. Nothing about Anna's past other than allusions to the horrors she lived through in Leo's pack. At the start we meet a couple more wolves from her old Pack (George and Joshua) who I wish Charles had killed. Hopefully they will show up again in the future and get gutted by Charles then. I'm a little blood thirsty that way, ha ha.

Not gonna lie I was a little confused with the way things started. Had to check like 4 times at different parts of the book to make sure I was reading book 1. BUT it was fun

Ah shit. After reading the other reviews I realize I was wrong. A novella precedes this! Oops

1,5 stars, but I'll be generous and set it to 2.
Set in the Mercy Thompson universe and interlocking with stories I've read previously. Started as a bit of a struggle, I'll admit, since I didn't connect with any of the characters. I figured it was because I hadn't read the Alpha & Omega novella from the anthology On the Prowl, which is recommended, so I hurried to find it and speed read through it before continuing reading this. It didn't help much with the connecting to characters, but it did straighten out a few question marks.
So, do read the Alpha & Omega novella before this or, as I will do, stick to the main Mercy Thompson novels.

Definitely read the novella 0.5 before Cry Wolf!
Otherwise, it feels like we were drop in the middle of a book and that a few chapters are missing.

It was great to see more of Bran and Charles.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The thing I like best about Patricia Briggs' writing is how real and down-to-earth her characters feel. These are people you could meet and know in real life (lycanthropy notwithstanding.) There is a very comfortable feel to her books that I like, almost like reading her books is like curling up in a warm blanket or going home. This "going home" feeling is a tad more literal for me with this book, since it takes place relatively close to where I grew up. I get disproportionately excited about things like that.:) I guess I'm a little homesick.

My main issue with this book is that I'm having a hard time deciding if it's paranormal romance or urban fantasy. The difference is usually very clear to me - I used to have trouble discerning, but the more I have read of both genres, the easier it became. These days it's very easy for me, but this one was perplexing.

On the one hand, it technically meets all the requirements for a paranormal romance. There is a hero and a heroine, and there is a happily every after ending. It's also written in third person, which almost all PNR is. (In fact, I've never read one that wasn't.) Urban fantasy is almost all written in the first person; I've only come across one or two exceptions.

On the other hand, it felt more like urban fantasy storywise, and both the publisher and my library categorized it that way. And there's little to no sex, which doesn't necessarily preclude from being PNR but... well, you know.

In the end, I think I'm falling on the side of urban fantasy, basically because from what I can tell the second book is about the same characters and does not move on to a new hero/heroine. But this book is a hybrid if ever I saw one.

Really enjoyed Anna and Charles’ story—it kept me intrigued right to the end.
That said, the witch’s ending felt a bit anti-climactic after all the buildup and chaos. I get that the author was highlighting the quiet power of the Omega, so it kind of makes sense.
Overall, I liked all the characters, especially Asil.

This book is definitely a 2008 romance novel and the language doesn’t keep up with the times at times. This first novel had a hard start, that led me to look at other reviews. I learned there was a Novell I should have read that was printed in a short story collection. Going back and reading the Novell first would have made reading this book so much easier and feel it should have been published as part of this story. I feel like this book was kinda instant love with the use of mates. This is not my favorite kind of trope and I prefer a slower burn. I did like how the author added conflict to the relationship and story.

This author is a local author to me and has a series set in my home town. Excited to continue and read more.
