I wasn’t going to review this book because I had few positive reactions about it, but after a couple of days I’m still annoyed by it, so I thought I’d just rant it out. My original “review” posted on Good Reads was just this, “2 Generous Stars. This book was ridiculous.”

I’m just going to go the list route here.

-In the beginning of the book the writing seemed on the younger side of the YA spectrum. I don’t really have a problem with that, but as the book went on the content became much older YA and the writing didn’t really change.

-Sophie’s best friend, Millie, had potential to be a funny, entertaining side character with her over-the-top theatrics, but she just came off spoiled and annoying. And I didn’t get the point of her being British. She didn’t really use any British specific phrases and I don’t think it was ever mentioned why her family moved to this little, boring town.

***EVERYTHING FROM HERE ON OUT CONTAINS SPOILERS***

Ok, a little more plot explanation. Sophie’s dad is in prison for murder. He thought he was going to be attacked and ended up shooting an unarmed man. We will later find out that this unarmed man was a well-known mob boss. Sophie’s dad still goes to jail for awhile, though. Her uncle is acting all sketchy and leaves town to do “business” that Sophie isn’t real clear on.

When an Italian family with 5 sons move into a local gothic mansion, Sophie immediately falls for Nic. This is a good example on why “insta-love” doesn’t work. The boy who was so nice and courteous and gorgeous is a PSYCHOPATH. Seriously. And obviously Sophie will wind up with his older brother, Luca, who isn’t a great guy either, but he’s obviously not as crazy. I’m not sure I can stomach another installment of these characters to find out for sure, though.

So anyways, everyone tells Sophie to stay away from the boys, but they won’t tell her why so she doesn’t listen. She goes all puppy-love on Nic and things are good until he finds out who her father is. She thinks he’s just upset because her father killed a man by accident, but what she later finds out is that the man he killed is Nic’s father. Neither one of them particularly cares about that, though. Sophie becomes slightly concerned when Nic tells her his family are mob assassins and at 17 he’s already a “career assassin”, but they’re noble and only take out people who deserve it, so no big deal, right?

Sophie was not a well-developed character. She was whiney and naïve for most of the book, then she was knocking a mob enforcer unconscious and cursing at adolescent psychopaths. She was morally disgusted at the right times, but then all of a sudden she didn’t care because Nic’s eyes were so dreamy. She was hard to like.

So it turns out that there was a good reason everyone told Sophie to stay away from the brothers because they are out to kill her uncle who is a drug dealer and they are owed a “blood debt” because of their father being killed – and that’s where Sophie comes in! She’s kidnapped to lure in her uncle and we find out the new mob boss isn’t the boys’ uncle like we are led to believe, but the oldest son, who is Luca’s twin. Luca ends up letting Sophie go because he’s not really the douche Sophie thought he was, but instead of running to safety, she goes to the warehouse where they were going to take her anyways. A couple people are killed and her uncle shoots Luca and Nic shoots her uncle. They all live, though, to see another ill-advised sequel.

Overall, Vendetta had potential, but the uneven writing and characters and over the top plot made it sound more ridiculous than anything else.

For Sophie, it feels like another slow, hot summer in Cedar Hill, waitressing at her family’s diner and hanging out with her best friend Millie. But then someone moves into the long-abandoned mansion up the block--a family of five Italian brothers, each one hotter than the last. Unable to resist caramel-eyed Nicoli, Sophie finds herself falling for him -- and willfully ignoring the warning signs. Why are Nic's knuckles cut and bruised? Why does he carry an engraved switchblade? And why does his arrogant and infuriating older brother, Luca, refuse to let her see him? As the boys' dark secrets begin to come to light, Sophie is confronted with stinging truths about her own family, too. Suddenly, she's torn between two warring dynasties: the one she’s related to and the one she's now in love with. She'll have to choose between loyalty and passione. When she does, blood will spill, hearts will break. Because in this twisted underworld, dishonor can be the difference between life and death.

Vendetta comes across as a Romeo-Juliet-esque story, with a mob twist - that's the shortest way I can describe this book. Persephone 'Sophie' Gracewell, has an outcast reputation in her town, thanks to her dad being incarcerated for shooting a person. So she knows what it is like to be the talk of the town and be considered dangerous for regular folk. She is also used to gossip and when a new family moves into the infamous Priestly mansion, and when they are rumored to be stayed away from, she prefers finding out for herself rather than trusting the gossip vine. Sadly for her, the rumors are only the tip of the iceberg, and by the time she is in deep, she and Nic have already fallen in love with one another. Their romance is kinda insta-lovey but it develops on a mutual understanding of what it is like to like with infamy. The second half is pretty intense with the danger from the mob, and before your imagination goes along the lines of them running away together, I would like to stop that train of thought and tell you that it has mostly to do with their fathers.

As for the characters, the first half is mostly character-driven, with a lot of characters being introduced and things being put into motion, while the second half has more drama, and relies heavily on the action. I found it a little too dramatic, though, but I forgive that for the not-so-cliche story. Among the boys, Nic was a bit irritating to be honest and I felt at times sparks might fly between Luca and Sophie instead. I don't get the whole grey morals take, but this is a different genre (I honestly haven't read any mob-based stories before) and hope that it rises above that in the next book.

Received a review copy through Edelweiss.

Leggerò il secondo per un motivo ben preciso: Luca.

Ok, so.

If I rated this objectively, I probably couldn't give this more than 2-3 stars but that's not what I'm about, son. So.

Truth is, this was just so damn enjoyable and fun that 4 stars are in order.

Characters and relationships being awesome and making sense to me and a book being entertaining is always going to be more important to me than checking a book for flaws of any sort (ie whether the plot is illogical, unrealistic etc.). So, if a book is enjoyable to read for whatever reason that is always going to trump any objective flaw I might find. That's why my rating is what it is. However, if you're the sort of person who craves logic and realism, I would advise you to not go here, because oh boy was this book a giant question mark when it comes to that a lot of the time.

1) Her uncle is a drug boss who owes Mafia family Falcone a blood debt and flees LEAVING HIS ENTIRE FAMILY BEHIND?????????? What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck in which world does that make any sort of sense, obviously they're gonna get taken hostage to get to you??? The only thing dumber than Jack leaving Soph and her mom behind was that the Falcones didn't take them hostage earlier. What sort of loser Mafia family are you, srsly.
2) He tells her to stay away from the boys in a casual as fuck way and then expects her to listen to him??? Obviously she's not going to do that, you told her that in a oooh-no-boys-for-you-niece way, not in a they're-gonna-fucking-torture- and-kill-you way. THE FUCK (I fucking love that Sophie points that out to him when she finds out later btw <33)
3) These boys are the Mafia family of all Mafia families and yet they need half the fucking book to connect the dots and figure out that Sophie Gracewell = Persephone Gracewell, niece of mortal enemy TM. Seriously? SERIOUSLY.
#LOGIC.

There's sort-of-insta-love, but it honestly didn't bother me that much in this case, mainly because it felt like it was rushed to get to the larger plot AND because Sophie didn't wax poetry about Nic's stormy sea blue eyes that you coud just get lost in.

Nic is so full of shit when he's like 'SHE'S MINE TO PROTECT' Dude, you're doing an awful job, to be honest. try harder.

Now to the positives:

SOPHIE IS FUCKING AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
(This pretty much is the main positive like DAMN GIRL)

1) When she finds out that Nic is part of the Mafia and he trys to feed her bullshit about how this means he has a higher code of honour loyalty and morals and she's like LOL but you kill people for other Mafia families who do evil shit you selective hypocritical motherfucker I CLAPPED. And the self righteousness of the family and wrongness of vigilantism was also pointed out. Sadly, she kisses him after, but oh well. At least she later recognizes that she was far too forgiving, so.

2) She just sasses everyone and I loved it. Like, for example, they kidnap her at the end and she just goes "It was completely, unnecessarily dramatic." in reference to their demeanour. I just. Really loved that. So much. All throughout the book. Sophie was kick ass and the Queen of Sass.

Her friendship with Millie was awesome. FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS. <333

One last thing:
God, I think the Mafia families' lies and hypocrisy would've killed me if it wasn't for the fact the Sophie calls them out on it. It was just so full of shit, self righteous and hypocritical. I don't think I would've been able to go on if Sophie had just gone "Oh they only kill criminals though, so it's fine, Nic, KISS ME!" Lord. But instead she went WTF and I lived to see another day.

Also, turns out, they don't give much of a fuck if you're innocent or not when it comes to their beloved "blood debt". Also something that would've pissed me off if no one had called them out on it but instead there was a disagreement within the family and Nic went "Uh, since when do we do that? The fuck" and I lived to see another day (again). Inner mafia family feud and disagreement + some really grayblackish morality to take this to a darker place? YUP. Here for it. Something potentially dealbreakingly awful turned into a betterment of the book? CHECK.

Honestly, I just really loved how complex the portrayal of the mafia families' actions/code/justification was and how all the characters reacted to it. I was initially afraid this book would gloss over that and just be like "he's a dangerous bad boy with a gun but since he only hurts criminals and is also hot idec let's make out." But instead I got this really complex discourse and I really, really appreciate it.

So yup, this way enjoyable as fuck.

And also unrealistic as fuck but what can you do.

- Prostě tam je tolik věcí obvious?? A ona vůbeeec nemá tušeníííí
- Její máma je taky dílo, kdo dá dceři mini sexy zlaté šaty a pošle ji na párty?? A očekává, že to bude nějak cudné?? Haha

4.5 stars

I received a free copy via Edelweiss.

First Impression: Vendetta was a little disappointing actually. An interesting and engaging read nonetheless. Action-packed, swoony-worthy love interests; but a bit of a weak heroine who was constantly being 'rescued' by Nic and Luca. There was quite a bit of mystery and suspense, but nothing I found mind-blowing -- a bit predictable. Perhaps it might have been something I would have enjoyed at around 16-17, but my reading tastes have changed a lot since.

Review: When five brothers move into the abandoned, and long thought haunted, mansion in Sophie's neighbourhood, it's safe to say life as she knew it was forever changed. Sophie's drawn to bad boy Nicoli, and is consequently drawn into a forbidden love between two warring powerful underground families.

Sounds great, right? Mysterious and criminal, dark and sexy. Romeo and Juliet meets The Godfather. The cover is lovely. Oh, how I so wanted to LOVE this book. Instead, I just liked it.

It isn't a bad book. It's action-packed and suspenseful, but also cheesy and cliché. I read it in a day or two, but the romance between Nic and Sophie develops quickly and the 'twist' was a bit predictable. I know for a fact I would have liked this a lot more when I was a little younger, but my reading taste have evolved and I like a little more depth in my reading now, unless I'm in the mood for something light to read. When I read Vendetta, I wasn't in the mood, I was looking for some deep, dark and mysterious thriller, and so it left me a little disappointed.

Another thing that rather bothered me was that sexual assault was used to develop the relationship between Sophie and one of the brothers to make them seem more 'decent'. Sophie was constantly being rescued by the brothers, except for one scene (which I actually thought was badass), which was another thing that bugged me.

Overall, an enjoyable light read, but wasn't the great crime thriller I was hoping for. Fast paced, strong plot and solid characters, but a little tame.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. I don't really know what I expected but it definitely wasn't that.
Venedetta does exactly what the title promises; blood, fighting and Mafiosos. But even after that warning I was still totally caught off guard. I guess I expected it to be loaded with romance. I mean don't get me wrong, there was romance and a tiny bit of insta love (ahem), but it was small compared to the figting and the mystery.
First off I loved loved loved Sophie. She is fierce, she is loyal and she has reasonable responses to certain events. I also really liked the brothers. They each had a different personality and I either liked or really disliked them (I don't want to say more in case I spoil something as mystery plays a very important role in this story).
One thing I didn't like and I think is important to say, is the disability representation. I think the author could touch on the matter in a much better way.

I totally reccommend Vendetta if you're looking for a mystery filled with a touch of romance read, it would be ideal especially in the summer time!!
