The chilling prologue had me hooked immediately. The Thrashers by Julie Soto is the definition of unputdownable. The suspense, the twists, and the chilling moments were perfectly paced. I lost count of how many times I gasped or felt actual chills.
The dynamics between friends, the pressures, the secrets—it all felt authentic, making the mystery even more gripping.
Soto does an incredible job of capturing that high school tension while layering in a plot that would translate flawlessly into a YA thriller movie.
And that ending?! Jaw-dropping. Someone please talk to me about that epilogue.

I couldn’t put this one down! It’s a twisty high school thriller with secrets in a friend group. The paranormal aspect threw me a bit but I thought it was interesting!

This was my first Julie Soto book and I’m so glad I requested it!
I struggle finding books I enjoy that aren’t fantasy or folk-horror, so I accepted that those were my genres and stopped looking into others a while ago, but something about The Thrashers just called to me, so I took a chance.
I really didn’t expect to enjoy this as thoroughly as I did. The plot was smooth and coherent and, most importantly, interesting: It had me hooked from the very first line!
I think the last book I enjoyed, with a loosely similar premise, was The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and I would compare the two, in my head, to be similar in writing and tension.
The whole way through The Thrashers, I was so curious and questioning everything, trying to piece together the puzzle, and the last time I was that invested in a non-fantasy, thriller-mystery was with The Naturals: It took me back to 2016 in all the best ways.
THE CHARACTERS!
While I did find all of the characters varying levels of interesting, I didn’t really connect with Lucy or Paige on a deeper level; they were too bitchy and…. familiar, and I didn’t want to know them.
Zack felt like he was just….there for me, like he wasn’t really important to the plot, but I think the plot would also be lacking if he wasn’t there, its a difficult choice.
Jodi was layers upon layers of interesting and relatable. I connected with her character the most, either because of the way she was written, or because the story is told through her eyes, who knows. But I enjoyed the way she viewed the world and I related so deeply to how she felt in the friendship group, not knowing whether she was expendable or a valued friend, not knowing if her friends made plans without her or not. She was written incredibly well!
Julian. Men named Julian will always be my downfall. While I still don’t know if he was using Jodi towards the end, I hope he wasn’t. He was so adorable and shy and I loved it! Going to her show when no one else did, the drive-in, saving her from the car in the lake, the paint scene! Love Love Love!
Julian’s and Jodi’s chemistry was incredible.
I love the slow bond they formed throughout the book, giving small pieces of vulnerability to each other, and the gradual trust that grew as a result, and how it tied everything up in a nice bow at the end because Julian wanted to be truthful with Jodi.
The epilogue gave me WHIPLASH!
I did not see that coming!
I can’t decide if it’s a perfect ending or if I need more!

woah, this is definitely as good as everyone says! I really enjoyed the question of whether there were supernatural elements or not within the mystery or if it was guilt driven paranoia! This was such a good mystery with lots of deception, twists, and turns! I am definitely looking forward to any future mysteries by Julie Soto!!
