Working as an emergency medic for a remote fire camp, Anna and the half crew become trapped up a mountain in California when a forest fire becomes a firestorm. Forced to take refuge in fire shelters (pop up aluminum tents), they emerge after the fire has passed to find one of their number murdered. Everyone is a suspect (except Anna) as crews below work to clear the road up, helicopters grounded by weather and some in the camp suffering severe burns with little to no resources.

I found this an excellent read. I’ve enjoyed the previous Anna Pigeon novels, but this one, with the trapped setting, was even better.

Another great Nevada Barr mystery. She turns the cozy mystery on its head by setting our characters on a mountain, fighting a forrest fire. When there's a firestorm, they each have to take shelter in the individual "shake n bakes." Upon crawling out, they find one of them has been murdered--stabbed in the back. Anna Pigeon, our heroine, has to keep the survivors alive, the tempers under control, and, oh yeah, catch a killer, as the team waits for the weather to clear and rescue to arrive.

I have bespoke of myself to not be a mystery reader, and again proven my declaration to be correct. I had to read a mystery for class, so I picked one with an appeal element that I thought I would enjoy - this book (and series) is set in various National Parks. And I was indeed correct in that aspect, however this appeal element was pretty much the only thing that I enjoyed.
Anna is a park ranger and EMT that is temporarily based in California to assist a fire fighting crew. She is caring for the fire fighters when they hear of the death of the person who is believed to have started the fire. Another death occurs when a small group gets trapped by a firestorm. This small group ends up isolated on the mountain for a few days before they can be rescued. And there is a murderer among them!
The first half of this book was interesting - National Parks, fire fighting details, etc. The second half bogs down to an agonizing creep. The set up, storyline and character development is handled in the exact same way as in a romance novel - by telling and not showing.

A nice quick murder mystery / survival novel. The main character, Anna Pigeon, has a ridiculous name but is a fun character to follow. The setting was really interesting and the survival aspect gave a nice twist to the usual murder mystery formula. My only real gripe was that a few characters were a tad hard to distinguish and keep separate in my mind.
