I was mesmerized by the writing in this book! I loved hearing about how the video games were made and the play through of all of them.

The first third of the book was amazing!!! I couldn’t stop listening (I listened to the audiobook) and I never wanted it to end. But… then it got kinda boring in the middle and towards the end.

I couldn’t give it 5 stars because it was a little boring at times and one of the characters deserved better!!! I also wasn’t satisfied with that ending. I like the way it ended but I wish it was a little more detailed (how ironic since I mentioned that some of it was boring).

Do I recommend this book! YES!!!! But only if you’re into video games or you enjoy hearing about how they are made. Also, there were some confusing time jumps and multiple character perspectives. I typically don’t like third person narration but I did enjoy it in this book.

ALSO.. I don’t think I would’ve been able to get through the book if I actually read a physical copy and not listened to the audiobook because the chapters are LONG!

I have learned some things after reading this book.
1.) I do not enjoy the coming of age genre.
2.) I need to stop (or at least greatly decrease) reading books written after 2020.
3.) I gotta stop looking to pop culture for my book recommendations.

I didn’t realize until after I started that this book is the same author as The Storied Life of A.J Fikry. With that fresh in my mind, some of my same complaints apply— mainly that dramatic events are often thrown in for shock factor that I don’t think actually help the storyline. I still enjoy her writing style and find it easy to read, but again the choppiness of timelines and character POVs led me to feel less connected to the main characters. I also found the book to drag on at times. Maybe if she cut the book in half I would’ve rated it higher.. I definitely enjoyed the first half more than the second. I even thought the book was ending and was going to be pleased with what I read… but PSYCH you’re only halfway done. There was definitely woke agenda thrown in, which at first wasn’t too annoying, and of course is to be expected these days. But the one chapter just completely derailed (if you’ve read it, you know the one). It felt like the last season of Brooklyn 99. What could have been a great story, all of a sudden had a giant virtue signal message thrown in that completely took away from the enjoyment. I’ve read books I disagree with and can still appreciate the story…. That chapter was a mess, whether you agreed with the authors viewpoint or not.

All this to say….. I need to go a few decades back in books for a while and maybe return to my lost love of historical fiction …….
