I don't see myself as a fan of Coming-of-Age novels, but I really enjoyed this one. You can really see yourself as Sam or Sadie (or even Marx), going through life and it's vicissitudes by stage. The story is reminiscent of how we spent most of our childhood, playing video games. The plot flows seamlessly, with simple and accurate vocabulary to describe every situation and the characters thoughts / feelings.

On top of this I think this book has one of the best (if not the best) chapter I've read in my life in "NPC". Knowing from the beginning of the chapter how everything will wrap up and yet feeling so vulnerable at the end. Surreal and slightly disturbing experience that shakes you up in ways you haven't imagined.

In the beginning, I liked this book and its characters. However, I got bored about halfway through and had little to no desire to pick it up for almost a month. I decided to give the audiobook a try, and I’m glad I did, because it helped me get back into the story.

At times, the storytelling was beautiful, and at other times, it seemed like it went on and on without purpose. Or, at least, I just didn’t really care as much as I wanted to. I’m not big into video games, so that could definitely be why.

I felt that the characters were realistic, and I appreciate that we got to see multiple sides of them over many years.
