Haiku Book Review.
What did I just read?
Was this a soft core porno?
Good thing this was short.

One day Yeong-hye decides not to eat meat. A bit startling to a traditional Korean family but she is also not eating animal byproducts like cheese and eggs. She nibbles on vegetables and her body quickly deteriorates with no protein. She has no reason for this simply that she had a dream. She is soon sent to a mental health hospital.
Yeong-hye has gone mad and her story is told in three parts from three different points of view but never her own. Her condition gets scarier and scarier as she brings herself close to death. I found the topic sad and frightening. To not have the full support of your family through such a fragile time in life is shocking and contributes to the illness. The ending is ambivalent and sad. I loved every word of this story.

Powerfully violent. Both outwardly, but also internally and self-directed. Genuinely unsettling early on and is unrelenting throughout. That said, it is horribly compelling. The style of prose keeps the scenes moving and my interest was entirely with the characters minds.
I listened to this as an audiobook that I borrowed from my local library. Support your library wherever you can!
