this was very sad, which i thought was similar to death of a salesman, but i liked the hopeful ending.

Lorraine Hansberry play opens up with Walter and Ruth Younger waiting for an insurance check to come in after Walter’s father died. Lena Younger, Walter’s mother, is in charge of the life changing $10,000 that is coming in. Walter wants to put the money down on a bar to make more money, while Beneatha (Walter’s sister is in college to be a nurse), and Ruth and Lena dream about a new house. The play covers themes of dreams, assimilation, and gender in a very quick and impactful read.

There is no lexile score on booksource, and the grades listed at 8-A. This play has a lot of different contexts that a reader might want to know before they start reading. Including reading the Langston Hughes poem that is the epigraph of the play. Connecting both the play and the poem to it’s context of the civil rights movement is very important. I also read somewhere that the play was based off a lawsuit, Hansberry v. Lee. Learning about the Fair Housing Act will also be helpful to reading. I think that reading this play or watching it would be helpful for everyone, past 7th grade. In 8-12th grade, I think students might support need while reading.

I was able to read this play in one sitting, while my partner was watching the 1989 Road House, which was an odd movie to watch in the background to the story in the play. I really enjoyed reading this play, the plot moves very fast, and flows together so well. I’m hoping to watch one of the movies soon, as I think watching it will be a totally different experience. As I said in class, I went into reading with almost no background knowledge about what it was about. And I think it would have been a lot of fun to read this play in a classroom setting, I would love to experience the conversations that this play opens up.
