Ehhhh, not for me. Just goes to show that pretty prose and a cool concept does not automatically mean a good writer. I truly did not give a singular fuck about any character in this book, not even Marlinchen. They were all so bland and unseasoned. Certain images were repetitive to the point of redundancy (Rose’s violet eyes, plum pits, plum juice). READ TRIGGERS FOR THIS—I dove in and was shocked at what was in here. And this is coming from someone who loved Andrew Joseph White’s body horror books!! At times, this book truly felt like trauma porn. Bad things happening to everybody, but what was the point other than to make everyone suffer?

I don’t usually read books like this. I love folklore/fairytale based retellings which is why it interested me, and the authors writing drew me in.

It is… gory, uncomfortable, dark, weird, and at no point did I know what was going to happen. It was oddly more sexual than I was expecting and I don’t think the story needed most of it, but that didn't ruin it for me.

It’s FOR SURE not a book for everyone. Again, dark and VERY uncomfortable, not scary, but I was fascinated by the theme of hunger and the monsters. I ended up really really enjoying this way more than I expected.

I am weirdly obsessed and will probably read everything by this author.

This book is painfully heartbreaking and raw with its emotion and depiction of brutality and suffering. Being looked down upon and treated as an ornament rather than a human. The painful expression of trauma and grief and abuse and some self loath. despite all these she has beautifully woven an intricately passionate and tender story of love, loss, pain and memory with poetic prose and descriptive atmosphere, setting a wholly gothic masterpiece novel. a book i would reccomened to read once in your life for sure.
