I am aghast, confused and defeated.
I have loved the first book, the second one not as good as the first but was good enough and had hopes for this third installment to wrap up the gothic trilogy. However I sit here wondering where book 4 is to make sense of this ending.

Before getting to all the negative, let me at least highlight the positive; my very best to Kristin Atherton for narrating this trilogy, your acting and different voices in these saga were amazing and I hope to hear more of you in the future.

Now for the rant:

The pacing for this third book is off; the big twist that comes midway through the book had been revealed at the end of the second book, so there was never any tension or stakes. The second half of the book could’ve been good if it had been the focus of the book itself but because it all comes so late it’s rushed and introduces plots and characters without weight to them.

The ending though, I have no words. I wish I did, but there’s no making sense of it. (Excluding the epilogue, which at that point I really didn’t care for) I don’t understand why and wish I could ask the author why she chose what happened. It’s doesn’t work, it comes out of nowhere, it’s not earned, it leaves many open plots and there’s no book 4 to close them so, what was it all for??

Another couple of thoughts before my mind explodes;
- What was Sigma doing all the book if we did NOTHING WITH IT FOR THE PLOT?
- why in the world do we need a Christmas novella if you aren’t going to give the saga a proper ending?

On to my next book, hoping to forget this ever existed soon!

First book of 2025 and I hated this, which I did not expect considering I enjoyed the first two. I was so bored the whole time

This is top tier!! Favorite book in the series! Will think about this series forever

"Do not make yourself small. Do not change yourself to suit him. Teach him how to treat you, and remember that you deserve everything that this life has to offer."

And with this book, the Belladonna trilogy is done! It has been quite some time since I've been this entranced with a book series. I fell utterly in love with the world the author depicted, and most importantly with its characters.

This is the reason why I'm unable to rate this book as high as the first two ones. While I loved Blythe, I found that she lacked the complexity I was used to with Signa. Given the change of protagonist, I got the feeling that this book was more of a spin-off than a direct sequel. Yes, it picks up directly after the second book, but it felt disconnected from the other installments in the series.

While Belladonna and Foxglove had this distinct gothic and macabre aesthetic, with Death being quite litteraly a main character, Wisteria veered more into the traditionnal magical romance between two ennemies. I felt that the stakes were not as high.

The other point I'd like to mention is that I found the story really predictible. It was a complaint I already had with Foxglove, but it was even more so notable in this one. I already guessed the solution to every plot point at around the 30%, and was not surprised at any point in the story.

But while I have some (bad) thoughts about this book, it remains a really solid read that I devoured in two days. And let's be honest: were the author willing to write another story set in this universe, I would be the first one reading it!

4,5⭐️
