The storyline was pleasantly unexpected having read 1984. There is one scene in there that makes me gag like no other tho oml.

Has some interesting ideas and moments, but ultimately changes too much and goes on too long. Don’t like what was done to Winston’s character, he’s just pathetic now, and Julia is less heroic and interesting and more just.. driven by sex. It’s an obsession in this book, and while it’s arguably believable for a character of this world, it’s just not the most interesting motivation. The second half just drags and loses its focus, felt like there were some interesting ideas in the first half that disappeared once Newman went for more plot.

An interesting take if you love 1984, just expect to criticize more than you’ll think this a solid addition.
