I finished Crescent City book 1, I loved it, I loved it so much more than ACOTAR
I think it was because it sang to my 15 year old Buffy/Angel/Charmed (& later 21 year old) / Supernatural loving heart

SPOILERS. SPOILERS. SPOILERS.

Giving it 2 stars for effort and because I have a soft spot for SJM. I want to go 1, but I am trying really hard to be fair.

I may be the minority here, but I borderline hated this book. I love fantasy. I loved every single page of her ACOTAR series. But this book killed me. It made my heart hurt in unnecessary ways.

The first 200 pages or so were beyond confusing. All the different creatures and places and word building was overwhelmingly excessive. I wanted to throw the book across the room. Way too detailed while somehow not giving near enough details for me to know what the heck I was supposed to understand or who/what was vital to the story.

I managed to persevere through though and I am rewarded with…ALL. The. Murder. I disliked most of the characters in this book and to be honest, most of the ones I DID like were axed. I am still not over her obliterating 80% of the characters that she had me bond with within the first 100 pages of the book. I kept hoping it would all be worth it and I would get over it by the end of the book. NO. I did not. It’s been months and I’m still not over it. She made me love Connor. She made me love Danika. And the closure is…waving at Connor who is forever dead and gets to watch her live her life without him and Danika ceasing to exist or have an afterlife after Bryce sacrificed hers for her? That wasn’t enough for me.

I say all this to say: if you’re a sensitive person who grows attached to characters quickly and NEEDS a happy ending…skip this one.

overall thoughts

ok! what in the zootopia!

the first 100 pages were really hard for me to get into, i felt like i kept flipping between the map and houses and figuring out what the hell was going on. the idea of having modern technology stressed me out because i just kept thinking, "now how in the hell did they do all that?" ONCE i was able to get a grapple on the plot and go "oh they progressed like we did, it's not that serious," i started to get into the book.

honestly if someone told me this was the first and only book, i'd be fine. i felt like it ended off pretty well even though the looming of a rebellion is on the horizons. i didn't FEEL like i needed more from these characters. it's not like acotar or throne of glass where even in the end of one conflict, i needed to see how this other conflict plays out. i don't think i'm entirely invested into these characters as much as i am of sarah's other series. at this point in time, i've already read the second book and the only characters i'm hooked onto are ithan and ruhn but everyone else makes me want to scream.

Listen it’s like Big Brother gone wrong and someone smuggled in drugs to make it interesting. Out of all SJM books, this is the one where I was literally WHAT IN GODS NAME IS GOING ON for the last 200 pages. Im still unsure wtf is a Vanir and at this point, im too afraid to ask. One star off because unfortunately, everyone purred too much and the “LIGHT IT UP” quote invoked Fall Out Boys song and I can’t get the song out of my head.
