yeah it's "telling" more than "showing" sometimes that's the point... those sections are primarily either robin convincing himself that his relationships are strong and positive and he is exactly where he should be, or r.f. kuang not giving audiences the chance to misconstrue the experiences of her marginalized characters the way that the setting and people around them consistently does.

Babel is an intense story containing important themes like racism, colonialism and languages. For me, Babel ended up being better as an idea than in execution.

The characters felt one-dimensional, and even stereotypical. The relationships lacked something, and they didn’t feel multidimensional and real. Robin Swift, from whose point of view we view most of the story, is a confusingly unmemorable and flat character.

The ”magic system” felt a bit… unmagical. I didn’t quite feel the 1800s or the dark academia vibes, despite the book’s efforts.

I’m sad that the book wasn’t an excellent reading experience personally, but I think it’s an interesting read worth a place on your TBR!

Easily a new favourite book, can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much.
Ramy, Victorie and Robin are gonna stay with me for a While.
