Ahhh, we finally get to learn more about Kyo's past and what being possessed by the spirit of the cat actually means. I loved this part of the series because it shows just how much Tohru cares about Kyo, even after learning about his terrible secret and I loved that. She really doesn't see any bad in a person and when I first read the series in high school, it inspired me to be more like her.

The growth and development of the characters is so great and amazing, but I do feel bad because you can see that Tohru is becoming closer to Kyo than she is with Yuki. I never shipped Tohru and Yuki, even with my first reading, but I still could feel his jealously and pain when he saw that Tohru was still wanting to be around Kyo after learning his secret.

And there's most of the anime story done and dusted already. I remembered it being more books worth... guess I misremembered. The contents of this book is the one part that the anime might have done better...

OH MY GOODNESS.
TOHRU, CAN YOU GET ANY AWESOMER?

I watched the anime before I read the series, and I have to say, the manga is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
better.
The anime wasn't shit, but it merely was too short and did not really answer anything accept who Tohru picked in the end. I mean come on, that ending was weird. Not only because what took place in the end, took place in only volume 6 of the manga, but because...

NO ONE MENTIONED THAT KYO COULD TURN INTO A ZOMBIE BUNNY/CAT THINGY.

I mean, come on! No one mentioned that at all in the anime! Not any hints or anything. Just someone ripped off his bracelet and BOOM ZOMBIE CAT. And I actually found that form to be a bit scary, so I understand why Tohru ran away, puking, and...was just...kinda weirded out. You know, wouldn't you feel kinda creeped out if your friend turned into a rotten flesh smelling, demented zombie cat?
And don't say no. I love Kyo with all my cat loving heart, but that's got to freak out anybody.
Anywhoozle, I loved this book because Tohru
SpoilerPuked, got scared of him, and admitted she was afraid, which really shows how much she cares about Kyo, even though he practically ripped her shoulder open..
got over her fear and accepted Kyo for who he was, monster or not.

And awww, I love Kyo and Shihan's relationship! I'm glad to have gotten to know more of Kyo's past. And although I was sad, I'm glad at least he was there for Kyo.

And let's get one thing straight.

I don't like Kagura.

As I think many fans of Fruits Basket can tell you, this is far and away one of the most important, heartwrenching, beautiful volumes of the manga. It is undoubtedly a turning point in many ways.

Many times over the course of the series, Fruits Basket caused a lump to come to my throat. But as I read this one, I found myself actually shedding tears. The combination of art, dialogue, and scene setup came together to create an amazingly moving scenario. Even now, Tohru's outburst (I almost want to call it a soliloquy) to Kyo remains one of my favorite parts from the entire series. The flashbacks to Kyo's childhood were heart-tearing, but that only made Tohru's assertion that much more striking. And honestly, I can't see how someone could keep from crying when Tohru carries cat-Kyo home in her arms...that single panel made me stop, close the volume, and take deep breaths for about a minute, composing my emotions. Kazuma-sensei kneeling was just the crowning touch.

This is also, by the way, the volume that made me certain that, no matter what, Tohru and Kyo were meant to be together. :)

The first volume I'm giving 5 stars. The Shishou storyline made me cry.
