Okay! Wow! This was good, sentimental, entertaining and fun to read.

The story began smooth and nice but I started liking it more when the banter did come into picture or rather when they first met. Rosen was angry (that is saying it mildly) but their formal introduction was amazinggg.

I like the references to other movies, stories here. When Jane gets a makeover and the result of makeover is you have people stumbling on their words, loved how Edward was reacting to this.

Jane and Edward are broken, flawed, real and characters you will relate to and want to hug. They are well written and developed. Jane's growth and making a place for herself in the world were nobody thought about her and wanted to use her or her name for their benefit was powerful and inspiring. She was a foster kid surviving in a shark filled world and when she decides to stand up for her life, that comes as to being an assistant to Edward, a renowned lawyer.

I wasn't sure if i would like a retelling of Jane Eyre but until the end I couldn't put this down. It was one sitter, page turner read for me.

The tropes here forced proximity, workplace romance, kind of second chance, age gap, forbidden love were intricately woven into the feminine side of the book. This book, story writing was brilliant, smart, emotional, swoon worthy and perfect! This was perfectly perfect (if that means anything).

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Cute

This was silly and exactly what I wanted.

DNF - apparently am just not a fan of literary fiction. In this retelling of Jane Eyre, the heroine has been working in a restaurant to save up money for school. When she gets a job at a law firm, she gets into a relationship with her boss.

3 1/2 stars, a good update of Jane Eyre

A fun modern re-telling of Jane Eyre, set in a law firm in Toronto. It sounds a little odd, but it works well. I feel like the relationship is more healthy in this version than the original. This Jane is not religious and has modern moral standards. But the author catches a lot of the vibes of the original story.

Absolutely beautifully written . That's the kind of book you read in one sitting..

I struggled between giving 1 or 2 stars for this, but in the end, I couldn't give it a bump up. I don't know why I always get my hopes up for a Jane Eyre retelling. It's basically impossible- especially in a real world, modern setting.

This is not a good retelling but I don't think it's a very good book on it's own either.

Our heroine, Jane is fine in her modern form, I guess. She works for the most part, but Edward is a total mess. I couldn't understand why Jane would ever be attracted to him and their chemistry is borderline non existent. His wife in the attic scandal is so boringly preposterous that it takes all the air out of the story and Edward just seems like a chump and an idiot. He's supposed to be a great lawyer and yet he couldn't find his way out of the situation? Whatever. The resolution to this storyline is also kind of gross.

Jane and Edward's banter is okay, but the great romantic moments in this are bogged down by settings that are just weird. I can't think of a less romantic place for a
Spoilerdeclaration of love
to happen than a stairwell during a fire drill. That scene was so awkward and the build up to it even worse. I've never known anyone in good health who needed to train to walk down stairs or who got out of breath from going down them when there wasn't an emergency. It's tedious, but not strenuous, even if you're going down dozens of them (I should know- I worked on the 42nd floor of a building and had to walk down them during a fire drill). I was scratching my head and wondering why this was the setting the author landed on- like who thinks, oh I'll take the pinnacle of a love story and stick it in a confined, dark, echoey space full of other people that are trying to move as quickly as possible? It took away all the romance and made the scene completely lackluster.

Also Jane Raine??? I should have stopped reading right then and there.

Anyway. This has a lot of positive reviews and I'm stumped by them.

This is a 5 for me. If you have read Jane Eyre, this book does a wonderful job of giving us a spin on the story while also respecting the key points, emotions, and tone of the original.

Now, if you haven't read Jane Eyre, I can see how you might not like some elements of the book as much. But those pieces - which I don't really want to spoil - come directly from the original story. And this book would not be a good retelling if it left those out.
