I absolutely LOVED this book. I cried, I laughed, I highlighted A LOT. This book has inspired me to look for another therapist after my many failed therapy attempts. I did not expect this book to effect (idk which a/effect to use here I hope I did it right) me as much as it did. Will definitely be purchasing this book and telling everyone to read it.

What a great book! Lori Gottlieb talks about her life, how she became a therapist, and her struggles as well as the life challenges of her patients in such way that we feel like we're reading a novel. So many insights, the kind of book that naturally teaches you so much about psychology and gives you tools to cope with your own struggles without sounding like a "self-help" book. I loved it! ❤️

I really enjoyed this book, and of course, I’m obsessed with trying to figure out who John is and what’s the name of his show!

I liked her thoughtfulness and deliberateness with her patients. I liked knowing she is also someone who needs a therapist as well. It’s given me a new lens to look at me in therapist through.

Did not expect to get so emotionally attached to many of the characters in this book. I cried at the end.

I think about this book a lot, months after reading it, but I don’t know if that makes it a good book. The voyeur in me, the person that loves gossip, gets a lot out of a book like this, but as a social worker, I don’t know how I feel about a mass-marketed book that delves into people’s personal stories, delivered under the condition of anonymity. I’m sure they consented, I’m sure the details are changed. But this has fed the gossiper more than the therapist in me.

No rating because memoir/memoir like.

While reading this book, I often wondered what parts were fiction and what were real to be able to protect the privacy of her patients and therapist. As someone who is in therapy, I enjoyed seeing/reading about therapy from the therapists point of view. I loved the learning aspect of the book, understanding what tactics therapists use and how - not that every therapist uses every tactic mentioned in this book, but it was nice to see. I especially enjoyed reading about termination, how we carry these relationships with us even after termination of the relationship. I would recommend this book to certain people, but can understand why it wouldn’t catch other people’s interest!
