Maybe I just went from contemporary to classic too fast and the change of writing style and language put me off, but this was hard work. Also I thought there would be more to the Jekyll and Hyde story than the rough outline I had in my head but it doesn't seem so. I got half way through the next short story and, after finding two words I've never heard in 23 years of being a native English speaker, and way too much general grim description of graverobbing creeps I gave up.

The audio-book that I listened to only had the Jekyll and Hyde story so this is just a review for that!

4.5 stars - I loved this story a lot. Gothic literature is just so melodramatic and grimly whimsical that I fall in love right away. I loved how Stevenson explored the duality and non-mutual-exclusivity of good and evil.

If chapter 10 didn't exist, the rating would be higher.

Dr. Jekyll and mr Hyde: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Good story, some bits i didn't quite get though. But this is my first 'classic' and one of the first books i read from that time period. I have to get used to the older English. I do reccomend the strory, it was well written!

The bodysnatcher: ⭐️⭐️
I found it harder to get through then dr. Jekyll and mr Hyde. The writing is the same style, but the story is harder to get trough. There are also a lof of unclearities.

The bottle imp: ⭐⭐⭐
I liked this story! I am always confused how people fall in love so easily and would risk their life for it though... it doesn't make sense to me. But i liked how they could live happily ever after :)

Weir of Hermiston: ⭐️⭐️
I didn't like that i couldn't understand a big part of this story. I had a lot of difficulties with the Scottish speak bubbles. I like that they showed the different speeches, though. But my English is not on the level of understanding that.

I couldn't believe how different from what I was expecting and how short this book was. Going in, my main source of knowledge was the musical based on the story. The musical really takes just a kernel of the story and creates a completely different world. Once I got reset my expectations, which didn't take too long, I really enjoyed this tale of the two sides of a personality going horrible wrong.

I could see where I would have really enjoyed Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde had I not already been aware of the storyline. Of course, given the fact that this story is really famous, it's almost hard to avoid. This story is written not from Hyde or Jekyll's point of view, but rather, his close friend and lawyer's. Therefore, the condition plaguing Jekyll and Hyde is unraveled rather slowly. If you already know what's going to happen, it takes away from the joy of reading this type of story. I would still recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it but partially only because it's a classic.
