The Jane Austen hype continues to evade me

Incredible slow burn, lots of family drama. Some parts were hard to get through because I just wanted Wentworth and Anne to run into each other and have to speak. Anne is extremely mature, and her opinions are a delight to read.

“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope."
Good God, Jane Austen is amazing at writing letters, describing characters' inner worlds, and building subtle romantic tension. I was going to give this book four stars, but decided to not let the above quote cloud my judgement and overall impression of the book.
Having read Pride and Prejudice and Emma, I think Persuasion lacks the intimacy and dynamism between characters that Austen is so good at cultivating. I wasn't too invested in any of the characters until the book picked up the pace about halfway through. Also, the romance is a little too slow and doesn't feel fully fleshed out until the end of the book. Fortunately, there is some great commentary and conversation, as always in an Austen novel, on class, money and the fundamental differences between men and women.

It's a classic, so I've got to give it 3 stars, but like all of Jane Austen's books it's sooooooo slow.
The end is good but it is just so tedious getting there.

Not my favourite reading of Persuasion, which I also liked less than I remembered. It was almost more frustrating than anything else.
