I love Jon Klassen's illustrations, so that's why I picked this up. I love the cross-sections, seeing what Sam and Dave could discover...

Sam & Dave decide to dig a hole, and the reader gets to enjoy the dramatic irony of what they don't quite uncover. I loved the playful illustrations and the giggles that they ignite, but I feel like the book ends abruptly. I wasn't expecting it so I was a little thrown, especially since everything else was so thought out. I'd definitely recommend this one regardless.
For: readers wanting a silly book; fans of Klassen's illustration style.
Possible red flags: some readers may find the book's plot too frustrating.

I feel like this book is giving me an existential crisis. What just happened.
This amazingly simple book showcases some awesome art to hint at what you might give up if you don’t persevere. But it’s just about two boys digging a hole and their dog who spends most of the book looking like he might have an aneurysm.
This book is making me think a lot. And I have so many questions after finishing it. I can only imagine reading it to a child (who to be fair would probably get it straight away without a second thought.)

Lighthearted and straightforward. Nice illustrations, but there's nothing special about this book. It's ok.
In the hands of a talented reader, this book could be a fun read aloud.

This would be a fun read aloud book for kids. As the boys dig a hole, they keep making decisions that lead them away from the treasure which only the reader can see. The playful tone is bound to excite kids, but wasn’t that entertaining for me as the adult reader.
Loved Klassen's art as always, and the story started off as something I got (and thought kids would get) a real kick out of, but the (sorry for the profanity, but I am first and foremost a Teen Services Person and we are allowed to say words like) stupid ending did not work for me AT ALL. Definitely will not be using this in storytime or anything.
