Very much the style of one of my favorite illustrators, Jon Klassen, and cute and clever and quick.

Watching my students' reactions as I read this was quite entertaining. So many "talked back" to the characters, slapped their foreheads, or groaned with frustration.
funny lighthearted mysterious fast-paced

The story is fantastic, and the illustrations are great. Wholeheartedly recommend this one.

Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen must be preserved at all costs.

PROTECT THEM. GIVE THEM MORE PAPERS AND PENCILS. YOU YES YOU HAND OVER YOUR ART SUPPLIES.

I have a weakness for books that can be described as "deadpan" and this one nails it. Brilliantly sly, right down to the sarcastic cat on the last page.

Love Mac Barnett!

This is one of the 20 books I have as a part of my mock Caldecott collections. Students are evaluating and reading books. Then students will vote for what they think the next Caldecott Book will be.

Wow. I've reread this book a few times and each time I think of something different. This book begs to be talked about. With multiple people.
So good.

This book is all about the illustrations. It's a silly story that had my 7yo niece cracking up with nonstop giggles. Klassen's artwork again strikes the exact right note of humor. Readers will feel like we're in on a joke as we page through.

Every kid daydreams about digging a hole like Sam and Dave. Mac Barnett's subterranean tale succinctly and sweetly answers the question: what happens if you just keep digging? Jon Klassen's illustrations again earned him another Caldecott Honor, and I fully support this. His consistently hilarious and earnest artwork -- as demonstrated again in this book -- easily makes him my favorite current illustrator.
