I've found the later Poirots to be pretty hit or miss, but this turned out to be such a delight! Christie takes the twelve labors of Hercules from the Greek myth and manages to reconceptualize them into twelve mini cases for Poirot to tackle. I had such fun seeing with each new chapter how she reimagined each challenge. Some were naturally better than others, and a lot of them had pretty obvious resolutions, but still a lot of fun all the same.

I will say that one rather irritating thing about the Poirots is that a lot of his investigating occurs off-page, only giving the reader brief glimpses into his process. It does keep you in a certain level of suspense, but it can also be rather frustrating and seem a little lazy.

One thing that I thought was interesting here is that there were almost no murder cases. Some of this may be due to the nature of the twelve labors, but I also wonder if its 1947 publication may have played a role in those decisions. Perhaps both Christie and her audience had already seen too much death far too recently.

Overall, while not a standout across the rest of this series, this was definitely a fun one, and something a little different from Christie's standard whodunnits. Thoroughly enjoyed!

This was my first Agatha Christie this year of 2021. So far to say I really enjoy it. More than probably the last 10 or so novels. Agatha Christie is a good mystery writer but in their longer novels (and after the 40's) they become boring and it show she hated writing Poirot. I understand that. I understand that the character outgrew the creator and everyone "demanded" for her to write more and more of Poirot stories. She in turn wanted to write other stuff. IT shows that in the later 30's and 40's she didn't want to write because Poirot each time he only entered late in the plot. Here it's different. You've got the first full lenght novel where poirot is present fro start to finish and this isn't even a full lenght novel but a short story compilation that really worked. I really love these fast 30 pages story where you could have a plot and still see Poirot being the genius he is.

Suffice to say that its now one of my favorite after
- Murder on the Orient Express
- And then there were none
- The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

There are few novels to read before ending my Agatha Christie run that started back in 2007
