"'People should be more careful how they name their children...Thinking of an imaginary conversation. Your mother and the late Mrs. Holmes, sitting sewing little garments or knitting: ‘Achille, Hercule, Sherlock, Mycroft. . . .’ ”

"A gesture directed him to a flight of wide shallow stairs leading downwards. On each step a phrase was written. The first one ran: “I meant well . . .” The second: “Wipe the slate clean and start afresh . . .” The third: “I can give it up any time I like . . .” “The good intentions that pave the way to Hell,” Hercule Poirot murmured appreciatively. 'C’est bien imaginé, ça!'"

Love the concept of this book, but I did not get the closing Mr. Field. It comes from her earlier works. Perhaps it was a short vignettes. As always, Hugh Fraser was an impeccable reader.

12 great Poirot short stories, though there's a lot of variance in style and length.

Decent short story collection. I just feel that Christie's writing doesn't really suit a short story. There isn't enough time to develop the plot and characters to the point where you're really intrigued and it's hard to create a good ending that doesn't feel rushed, complicated, far-fetched or all of the above. Still enjoyed reading it but if you're looking for her best books, don't read her short story collections.
