Fun book of Poirot short stories. He looks to retire but engages in a series of cases that fit into the ancient Greek story of the 12 labors of Hercules. His great epic Swan song before he rides off into the sunset, so to speak. They are sometimes forced into the types which is only mildly amusing and feels overly stilted (gossip is the hydra, politiicians secrets are the stables, a perkinese dog in the lion, etc.), but they are still fun.
Some are mysteries in his classic sense (mysterious death, list of perps, classic detective work), but others are out of the box including a political intrigue, foiling a blackmail plot, search for a long lost love, etc. It avoids the Hastings trap of the idiot narrator, thankfully. Some of the characters even reemerge in later stories giving a bit more continuity to the book.
