The Labours of Hercules: Or, Poirot the Nuisance x 12
Dame Aggie Christie always gets me with her complex mystery novels, but whenever she tries to compact the "mystery" into a short story, or a single chapter, as she does in this "novel" with 12 short mysteries, I feel the altogether gravitas and believability disappears. When the mysteries are short, the characters (suspects) don't have time to develop and some giant leaps of logic are required. In this case, Poirot surmises 12 cases to the 12 labours of Hercules. One has to squint to connect them really...
That being said, this was one of her better "mini-mysteries" novel as the "mini-mysteries" were sometimes entertaining (the Nemean Lion, heh), sometimes unrealistic (the Arcadian Deer), but what remained consistent is Poirot, being Poirot, and somehow always coming to the right conclusion... no matter how far-fetched. These pesky criminals have no chance anytime Poirot arrives on the scene. And that's why we love him, mustache and all.

Every once in a while, I try a Poirot. My reaction is the same: he's a boring, condescending snob who mocks those who seek his help. His assistants do all of the leg work.

szczerze, zawiodła mnie ta książka. zamysł był świetny, imiennik mitologicznego Herkulesa przed przejściem na emeryturę wykona 12 zadań specjalnych o charakterze podobnym do tych z mitologii. jednak często rozwiązywane przez detektywa sprawy były na siłę nawiązywalne do mitologicznego Herkulesa. bez sensu również był fakt, że detektyw Poirot praktycznie od razu wiedział kto jest winny w danej sprawie i zawsze miał rację.
