I’ve had this book on my shelves for years and on a whim I went “why not?” And decided to pick it up.
This book follows a girl named Deuce who lives in the Enclave in a post apocalyptic world where people only live into their twenties. As she has now turned 15, she is finally able to become a huntress where she meets a boy named Fade who is not originally from the Enclave as they start to unravel the mystery to find out why things are the way they are.
For a YA dystopian book that came out in the 2010’s, I will say I decently liked this. I will find myself in the mood for an occasional dystopian every now and again and this is one I’d heard good things about back in the day. I also had found it really cheap at a thrift store plus I’d read from Ann Aguirre before.
I won’t say this brings anything new to the table, nor is this something I think you need to pick up or anything, but I would recommend it to someone who is still into this genre. I spent all day reading it without putting it down which says enough that it was interesting.
I definitely was more intrigued more in the beginning and then the book lost me a little in the end portion but the end made me want to pick up the second one. I do like this book enough that I’ll try to pick it up soon.
The characters are pretty mediocre. Tegan is the only one I really found all that interesting. Aside from that, most of them are pretty bland. They are very much your stereotypical dystopian characters.
The romance is about the same. It’s very much your standard “ordinary girl doesn’t question this dystopian society until a boy makes her question it” kind of thing. Fade was somewhat interesting I suppose. I don’t mind these two together. I wish we’d spent more time seeing their relationship grow before they got together but they are fine. I don’t think badly of them but I also don’t care much about them either.
The storyline is interesting enough that it kept me reading but like I said before, nothing ground breaking. If you feel in the mood to pick up a dystopian book, this is a pretty good one that I’d recommend but it’s also just your average dystopian book.
