this was going to be a 5 star until that ending!
i looove the way brontë addresses the reader in this.

i felt this book right in the religious trauma. especially when helen dies and she’s scared because she isn’t as strong in her faith as helen.
so let me say about why i HATED that ending.when jane returns to edward, she says he never would’ve actually forced her to stay as his mistress - like bitch he basically threatened to get aggressive if she didn’t agree to run away with him??? like we’re meant to be sooo happy that she got back with this liar? nah. the ending isn’t THE worst because she is now independent, almost has a developed frontal lobe and is now the more powerful one in their relationship. however, i just think her pinning over him stopped her from experiencing more, and when she was younger she wanted to experience more of the world, but she ends up only seeing essentially 3 towns.
my dream ending would’ve beenjane travelling to france or germany and running a school for orphan girls, where she makes sure they get a nicer education than she got and she loves all the school girls as if they were her own. in my dream ending she is happy single, childless and being smart and badass.
i love how feminist this book was for the time but i just think it could’ve been mooooore feminist.

Nice prose. I read it after Jasper Fforde's [b:The Eyre Affair|27003|The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next, #1)|Jasper Fforde|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1445540555s/27003.jpg|3436605], so it's neat to see the tie-ins from Fforde's novel as they "affect" the plot of Brontë's. Apart from that, an overall charming work of British literature which took me much longer to finish than it should have (not that this is at all a knock against the novel-- my Kindle screen unexpectedly broke while I was about halfway through the book).
