I have so much appreciation for the observantly detailed way Zadie Smith writes about the world. It’s a bit exhausting and slow motion at times, a bit disturbing even, but real and true. Reminded me to check my inner Howard.

ON BEAUTY ended better than it began, but I confess, for all my hopes of enjoying Zadie Smith’s writing, I’ve always finished her books disappointed.
This book reminded me of the worst bits of Jonathan Franzen with flickers of Jodi Picoult—the latter whom I’ve only browsed. It’s a sobfest with smatterings if keen insight, and hopelessness.
I cared for no one, despised all. At its best, ON BEAUTY made me smile, but the predominant reading experience was a keen desire to finish with a strict compulsion to busy myself with anything other than reading.

A funny, tongue in cheek take on family. Sibling relationships, romantic love & contempt, home, beauty…this book made Zadie Smith my new favorite author.
