Charming from beginning to end.
I'm starting a Nancy Drew movie and TV show kick and thought that I should read at least the first novel before watching any adaptations. My wife has always been a big fan of the book series and I always have a bunch of questions for her when we watch an onscreen version, so I wanted firsthand familiarity with Nancy and her friends before diving into my project.
Outside of her dad, Nancy's supporting cast doesn't yet appear yet in The Secret of the Old Clock, but that didn't lessen my enjoyment at all. In fact, I loved watching Nancy completely solo on a case, driven by her compassion for people and aided by her considerable wits.
I wasn't planning to immediately read more of the series, but this was such a quick, enjoyable read that I'm going to sneak other volumes into my other reading right away.

Just realized I've never added any of the Nancy Drews to Goodreads. My mom has hardcover first editions of all of them (except one little bugger near the end of the run) and they're basically how I learned to read. Oh, man. I should really go back and re-read. I wonder how they hold up?
The first Nancy Drew novel, I read this and many others in the series alot as a kid and it is still fun to revisit it 20 years lather. It is not perfect but I have alot of love for it so I cant help giving it a high rateing ;) Everything goes quite smooth and perfect with Nancy solving the mystery in this novel (and in the rest of the series) but it still gives some excitement to my maiden heart XD
The secret with the old clock by Carolyn Keene get a 8.9/10 stars.

This book isn't all it's cracked up to be. The writing isn't particularly good (I read the 1959 revised version), with lots of repeating of information and coincidences happening left and right. Nancy doesn't have any tough decisions she has to make. Things happen to her and she sometimes has to figure out how to get out, but even then, someone or something will come along and save her. The 3 stars is mostly for the nostalgia and notoriety of the book and series. I'm definitely gonna read more of the series, but to give it more stars is just to stand out in a crowd.
