I read this book a lot when my son was a newborn and I was reassured by much of the information and the message that "you can't make a mistake during the first two months."

I recently read through the sleep section again now that my son is six months old and I'm not impressed. Over and over, the authors write about undoing the mistakes in a rather chastising manner. I'll admit that our current sleeping situation is less than ideal (hence why I read through the sleep chapter again), but the tone was not helpful. What really bothered me was the assertion that babies trick their parents and take advantage of them. While I'm not naive to the fact that kids do this, I highly doubt my SIX month old is purposely tricking me. He's a baby.

I know this book is informative and helpful for some, but it has rubbed me the wrong way. On a personal level, I'm working on trusting my mom instincts and not focusing so much on what I read. Luckily, this book makes it easier for me to do this.

DNF - Partly because our edition was frustratingly out of date (after only 6 years), but I also didn't love the combination of matter-of-fact information and a forced folksy tone.

For the most part, I read the first few chapters and scanned the rest. There's a lot of excellent info for first-time parents, and I'm sure we'll use it as a reference once our bean arrives.

Recommended by my veteran Mom friends and our pediatrician. Have not read every page of this book... yet, because my baby is only 1 month old and some advice is age specific. But, this book is full of amazing evidence-based and practical advice that you really need. Worth having his book even though we live in a time you can google anything because when it comes to childcare the internet is a black hole of anxiety and judgement.

Baby 411 is full of helpful information, but I prefer the setup of “What to Expect”. A weird complaint for me is the shape of the book, it’s tall and skinny, so it takes more effort to keep it open. I used this more like a reference book than actual reading material.
