Hero at the Fall

Alwyn Hamilton

4.28 AVERAGE

The first thing that American readers of this trilogy should be aware of is the superiority of the UK covers. They're BEAUTIFUL! I ordered all three books so I could have these covers instead of the dumb, ugly American ones.

This book is just about perfect. Hamilton weaves legends into the prose masterfully, and her point that legends barely scrape the surface of truth hits home by the close of the story. It's inspiring in a way that made me want to examine any familiar legends and myths for the hidden story within.

The plot of this book is action-packed, just like the second one. There's heartbreak and sacrifice and senseless loss but Hamilton is true to the characters and, more importantly, true to the rules of this world (which is so conveniently forgotten by authors when they attempt to wrap up their storylines).

Haven’t read a good series like this in a LONG time. Absolutely loved the ending.

4.5 Stars. This is a strong and worthy conclusion to the REBEL OF THE SANDS trilogy. I loved the theme in this book about how real people can become heroes that turn into stories told, but those tales cannot contain the small and messy details of a person’s life. I love that we see this concept in action through the stories told about each character.

I loved Amani and her fierce love of the sands of her home and her willingness to do anything to protect it.

I loved this band of Rebels fighting together and sometimes dying in the name of the Rebellion and the Rebel Prince. Their camaraderie and support of each other through so much made my heart swell.

I loved the romance between the Blue Eyes Bandit and her Foreign Prince. Seeing a girl of the sand and a boy of the sea fight for each other. I do wish we’d gotten a little of his perspective though.

I wish I’d reread the previous books because I didn’t remember all of the mythology in this world and got a little confused about the different Demdji heroes and powerful Djinni of history.

More review to come.

3.5

Idk, it's a lovely series, and I would recommend it if you look for a good, fast YA, but I'm not really sure it deserves more than a 3.5.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH
4.7/5 STARS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE UNNECESSARY (BUT NECESSARY) PAIN THAT IT CAUSED ME.

SPOILERS FROM HERE*******************************
THANK THE STARS AMANI AND JIN SURVIVED. THAT WHOLE SACRIFICE DEBACLE. MAN OH MAN. MY HEART STILL HURTS EVEN THOUGH I'M SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY RIGHT NOW HAHAHA
Hala... My girl... Her death ruined me... but I don't think any death in this book will ever be more painful than Imin's. I still hate it. I understand Hala. Freedom. Every quote about her death I want to quote to everyone. Just so beautiful. And Sam. Oh Sam. I was in complete denial. Like, he couldn't DIE from those Abduls?????? And then the next chapter came and I just completely fell apart :((((
The epilogue. I love it so much.
And I hate how little Shazad was in the book. She was only in the second half???? I love her so much. I am so so so happy about her becoming the Sultima :D My girl!!!!
I have so much more to say but my eyes hurt from all the crying so. Edit later :)

my heart is full. it’s full to the brim. this book, this entire trilogy was such a masterpiece. it broke my heart and put it together at every single page. shazad, jin, amani. otherwise known as the owners of my heart. the religious elements in the book added to the beauty of the story. the entire storyline centred in the desert was absolutely magical. to sum it up, i love jin, he can shoot me and i’d thank him. yea that’s about it. jin.jin.jin.jin

Actual Rating: 4.25.

I feel like I’m so out of practice when it comes to reviewing books. I’ve had a very slow reading month for February because that just happens sometimes and I’m just now finishing my third book for the month. I will say I have been enjoying books I’m really enjoying so in that aspect I’m having a great reading month.

This book is the final one in the Rebel of the Sands series. I had originally wanted to read the series when the first book came out in 2016. I held back for a while because of book buying bans, but I’m so glad I finally read it. I love Amani and Jin and so many other characters so much. There’s so much focus on characters and character development which I discovered I really enjoy after reading Six of Crows a few years ago. Are any of these characters perfect? Of course not, but even in their mistakes the readers understand the choices they’re making.

I love desert fantasy novels so much and this series was great. The desert was basically a character in its own right. I like that living in the desert has given Amani so much grit and strength. And I love that throughout the series you get to see her hold on to that, but also really explore other sides to herself. The story telling aspect is probably what makes this a standout series for me. You get little stories within a series about their mythology and how the magic works. But you also get to see that sometimes stories don’t tell the truth and that real people can do extraordinary things.

Overall, this is a really well rounded series and I don’t understand why so many people are sleeping on it.
