VE Schwab is an artist. I love her style of writing…. It is so thoughtful and you can tell every sentence has been carefully crafted. Gallant is atmospheric and Gothic and packed with many passages that are so lovely and profound that you want to read them over and over again.
This book is slow paced but there is a strong, foreboding sense of building tension that drew me right in and got me reading the whole thing in one day. I even lit candles because I felt so atmospheric.
The drawings were beautiful and added an additional layer of complexity - it was fun trying to decipher their meaning.
Would recommend to those who love books about things that lurk in the shadows.

SO CREEPY. WHY WAS I READING THIS AT 11 PM LAST NIGHT.
(Full disclosure, I did skip like a third of the book in the middle; not counting it as DNF since technically I did finish it, but yk.)
Anyways, I think most of my complaints have been noted- the writing almost seems posturing in how "pretty" it's trying to appear, the characters aren't well fleshed out, etc. However, I do disagree with how other readers didn't find it scary LOL!!

This book had something intriguing when I held it in my hands in the bookstore. I felt like I had to buy it, and see the story inside it. I loved this book. I flew through it, and the themes were very good. It all just made sense to me. I am not a fan of horror or any creepyness, but when Schwab does it I just love it.
