The Moomin books are unbelievably wonderful. This, while not the first published, is considered the proper start to the series as it is where we meet so many of the characters, including my favorite, Snufkin. (The first book to be published is generally treated as a prequel.). In this book, Moomintroll and Sniff take off for the Observatory in the Lonely Mountains to ask about a Comet that is headed towards earth, and have various adventures and collect companions along the way. The Moomins are such a sweet and loving family, accepting of everyone, no matter who or what they are. Jansson's illustrations are charming and the scenarios our heroes encounter are whimsical, scary, inventive, and beautiful. While these books are ostensibly for children, I think that adults will get even more out of them. 4.5 feels like a low rating for a book where I have no complaints (except maybe that Little My isn't here yet!), but I do rate another book in the series higher. I am really looking forward to making my way through the rest of this beautiful series.
