This was not a great read.

Magnus felt nearly identical to Percy Jackson. Considering Magnus is a few years older than Percy was when his series started, I think it would have been great to show Magnus thinking/dealing with mature issues. Instead, Magnus felt like a cookie cutter 12-16 year old character.
Speaking of characters, all of the minor characters felt the exact same. They all had the same quirky-ness, deflecting the problems of the world with humor. Beyond that, each quest that the minor characters had the main characters go on felt the exact same: fetch quests, which didn’t help differentiate everyone.
As an elementary educator, I also question whether the Norse mythology was the right mix. Honestly, the mythology is so dense that I got confused which world was what and who was where, and I don’t think the names of worlds/characters from mythology lends itself well to a developing reader. I (a person with a PhD) couldn’t pronounce most of them, which doesn’t help with overall comprehension of the world and plot.
At the least, Rick made me laugh a few times.

I had a hard time really getting into this, even though I love PJO - if I wasn’t book clubbing it with my partner I would’ve been much slower. This was so much like PJO that it felt repetitive, yet not enough like it that it truly grabbed and entertained me.

I think I’ve heard that this is a series that improves, so I am looking forward to seeing what the next two have in store. I do really like the characters and the diversity of their identities, as well as learning about Norse mythology (of which I know so little). I love that it’s set in Boston, a city I know well, which made it easy to picture the various locations.

Rick did make me laugh multiple times, as he does, and I’m hoping it’s only up from here.

What a fun ride, I am not as well versed in Norse Mythology so this was educational, I certainly have a lot more to research now. Magnus is an amazing protagonist and the supporting cast are just as interesting. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

Sometimes I go too hard too long in adult fantasy and these “easier books” always perk me up. While there’s not no hardship in them it’s easier to digest. I didn’t know much about Norse mythology prior to this book so I’m unsure how accurate it is but I sure enjoyed it. A fun read

It took me a while to finish, but I absolutely LOVE this book. It was recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad they recommended it. I was honestly very surprised by
Magnus dying only a few chapters in
in the best way possible, it was not the story I was expecting. I never got into Percy Jackson, but I’ve fallen in love with these characters and this story. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.  I do wish wolves weren’t portrayed as so evil though, as they really aren’t monsters in real life.
