I should have read this years ago.

Cimorene is a rebellious princess, which I sometimes have misgivings, but given that she was an early-comer to the genre and that she doesn't reject her feminity and is rebelling more against boredom than against anything else, I really can't fault her.

The world is amazing, and as a fairy tale enthusiast, I loved all of the references. I have accepted it wholeheartedly as a Bookania story. (Which, for the record, just means that it's a lovely fairy-tale world.)

Now I need to chase down the next book in the series.

An okay junior reading book. The writing and characters are a bit silly. It was very concerning how the book treated death, the protagonist causally kills a magical bird and thinks she kills other people, dragons routinely eat people, and yet it is mentioned and then brushed aside. It was annoying that the author didn’t put much thought to descriptions, things are confusing and not imaginative if we don’t get a description.
For example we are told a dragon’s color and relative height but not much else which makes the story confusing as we are left wondering about them holding things or doing something.

I read this book in 5th grade and LOVED it! Now I remember why. It's delightful and I enjoy thinking about 5th-grade-me reading a book about a girl who did things HER way, and then found a place with other women who did things their own way, while the men were frankly a nuisance.

A lot of fun, heartwarming, and empowering! Love it.
